Great article. That game had everybody sitting on pins and needles. Legion Field was a great venue in its day, but the Ole Gray Lady lost her glitter, thanks to the city of Birmingham. I still have fond memories of that place; even the Goodyear blimp was a special site back then.

Everyone talks about that game and Archie Manning and the way he played. He did put some unreal numbers up. But everyone who looks back on that game in talking about Archie forgets.......Bama won the game. I remember watching Tim Brando and Tony Barnhart talking about that game a few years back and Tony was somewhat startled to learn that we won that night. And Coach Bryant hated that game. "Defense was horrible that night".

That was one of those "you had to have been there" games. No defense and it was whoever had the ball last wins. Hunter and Manning in a classic offensive shoot out.

I was a sophomore at that game. Never attended an athletic event with so many ups and downs like that. By the final gun, the whole stadium was on the verge of a mass cardiac arrest, me included. The sights and sounds of that night are indelibly printed in my memory. One in paritcular tv shot was of Archie crying after the gun sounded, Tebow-like. Archie Who left it all on the field that night.
