Government Shutdown

“The first bill is the No Shutdown Paychecks [to Politicians] Act. The second bill is the Withhold Member Pay During Shutdowns Act.

“The first bill would provide that, as long as we’re shut down—and I’ll explain why in a moment—as long as we’re shut down, no member of Congress can be paid. And the money will not be reimbursed at a later date or repaid at a later date.

I like this guy. He is easily the funniest member of Congress, but props for this idea, too.

I'm not sure that the Democrat leadership has enough functioning brain cells to come up with any plan, let alone an effective one.

Well.....we'll see but it seems to me they lost an very good opportunity here to build on the Tuesday election wins and find the 5 measly votes needed to open the government back up.

Now, in addition to all the other stuff.....air travel is getting more difficult thanks to the FFA's decision to reduce flights.

It's a long ways before the mid-terms are here....but this surely isn't helping the Democrats.......

Sen. John Kennedy responds to Sen. Chuck Schumer’s proposal to reopen the government:

“I don’t know what Senator Schumer is thinking. I mean, Earth to Chuck… Am I going to vote for this? The short answer is no. The long answer is h*ll no.”

“We’re going to be in a shutdown for a while.”

IOW, all this was for naught

I'm gonna be honest: I don't even know.

Now it DOES seem to me like the Democrats have set themselves up to be blamed later - but that assumes politics is a cognitive process and not an emotional one (and for most voters, it's the latter). But it sure does seem to give spark to the argument, "Hey, THEY shut down the government" - if it's opening on their actions.

OR......is the Democratic House caucus all together and going to be able to prevent it from opening anyway with a few Republican defectors?

I honestly don't know. But as I've said...nobody ever wins a government shutdown no matter how often the media chases that narrative.

Buckle up, it may all return in January.

I thought Schumer's offer of the health care funding with a one-year CR was a perfect strategy because it would have placed the GOP on the horns of a dilemma heading into the midterms. It might not have HELPED the Democrats, but it wouldn't have HURT them at all.

(And there were lefties who got mad at him over that; at least I understand up to a point why they're mad here with him and the "Traitor 8").

I don't know. I'm expecting His Great Cheeto Majesty to get worse. He'll definitely see this as a win and a road to even greater shenanigans.

Senator Angus King (D) on the Democrat-led shutdown: “Standing up to Donald Trump didn’t work. It actually gave him more power.”

This is an interesting point and one I hadn't thought of. I think a lot of Dems are quoting Lando Calrissian today: "This deal's getting worse all the time." Polling should be interesting this week.

I certainly have no way to know but I think the way it actually went down gave him more. We have no choice but to wait and see.

Many of the old guard Democrats are as beholden to Big Money as the GOP; so once the guys with the checkbooks snapped the whip, the old Dems fell in line (Thank you, Citizens United).

Another reason that old Dems and their backers are trying to prevent the younger Dems from taking over--many of the younger Dems are true progressives who might actually push for real change.
