Grubb to be next OC at Bama per ESPN

Bringing Grubb in is as significant of a recruiting coup as any CKD has had. He's a game changer and we still keep Sheridan to boot.

Bringing in Grubb and making a LANK deal with Milroe was an orchestration to hold the roster together. Remember, the portal was only open for us at the time for 30 days due to Saban's retirement. So we were exposed to losing our roster, think Marshall, with no way to replace those players before spring practice.

That is an interesting point. Maybe Grubb accepted the Alabama job, at least in principle, then saw film and sensed anybody coaching Milroe as OC was going to damage his reputation by the association, so Grubb stayed at UW (when Saban offered)/accepted the Seahawks job (when DeBoer offered) as an alternative to going down when the USS Milroe inevitably sank.
Just speculating. Anyway, glad he is now in Tuscaloosa. Coach DeBoer seems more comfortable with Grubb around him.

Drake Maye, backed out of his committment to Bama and JM was the "back up plan." If Maye is as talented as I think he is, there'll be a good book written one day on what "Maye have been" if his commitment sticks with Bama.

Maye could have been this generations Bo Jackson. Jackson actually grew up a Bama fan from what I hear and for a long time Bear just chose who he wanted and Auburn had to feed off the scraps. Bo was a big time recruit though and Bear was old and not in good health. Bear told him he'd have to sit for a while and Auburn had a younger more agressive coach who said he could play now. Bo signed with Auburn, the rest as they say is history. It was really an early sign of the end of Bear Bryant. I don't think Maye of course is the level of atlhete Bo was but having him instead of Milro would almost certainly have resulted in at least one more Natty and may have been the early crack in the dam that led to failure.

Kind of weird feeling to know we're back among the mortals, but such is life.

I actually wanted that a few years ago, or at least I thought I did. After 14 years of utter domination, I had kind of gotten bored, just knowing we would dominate every single game and would have very few close wins. But then when teams started challenging, i found myself wishing for close wins, just to make the games more interestimg to watch. But then when it started happening in 2021, it was happening just about every game, so I got over that very quickly. Now let's go back to complete domination.

When we were 28-40+ point favorites I rarely watched the game. It had got to the point where it was a foregone conclusion on what was going to happen and that just wasn't fun, or so I thought...

I've never enjoyed a season more than 2020

Zero stress and just DOMINATED every single team we played.

The only team that really put up a fight was Florida in the SECCG but we still stayed in front of them on the scoreboard throughout.

I felt what it was like to lose or have the threat of losing enough through the 3 Mikes era to never want that back.

I don't if I'll ever get used to losing (now that I know how consistent, elite-level success feels), but I will definitely acknowledge that I have accepted the "increasing possibility" of losing.

I'm not sure if that's any better or not, but it is indeed a much more mortal - and humbling - philosophy to have than the feeling of near-invincibility that I felt during the peak CNS years.

In retrospect, that seems like a Faustian deal. It destroyed the Bama Standard, and the mystique surrounding the program, and we still lost Bond, McLaughlin, and Downs, and we may have chased away some very good recruits..
Now we are back where we were a year ago, except now with a much less feared program.

Still better than the alternative, which is losing even more of the roster than we did, and potentially losing 5+ games. It was an impossible situation. We were getting bodybagged by the portal regardless, but had we not made that deal, it would have been a whole heck of a lot worse. And in spite of how bad this season seemed, we were still only 1 or 2 plays away from the playoff. This way, we are in much better shape for the future. We would've had to take a lot more guys in the portal this season to restock the cupboard, and this cycle wouldn't have been the best to do so, as this portal class seems a lot weaker than last year. We didn't really have to restock anything, just continue building.

I would say the Bama Standard is not destroyed. We just didn't measure up last year. And neither is the mystique surrounding the program. It takes more than one disappointing year to destroy that mystique, especially in light of CNS retiring. We can easily bounce back and I think the odds are good that we will. RTR!

Then it’s time to start making people fear us again.

IF the cancer that many believe has been excised, we‘ll see just how good DeBoer and company really are.

We still have more talent than most, and we have a really strong class coming in.
