Honestly, this is a kid who left Miami because he was disgruntled. He now quits Bama cause he's disgruntled. Kid obviously thought he should play more and got mad and took his ball home when he didn't. I can see where a kid sees that comment, he'll wonder, but the reason for leaving with no PT is easily explained away.

Most of my comments have been about topics other than Marc Guillon. Do you talk about anything OTHER than negative aspects of Alabama Football?

I'm trying to refute people like you who try to use this as some sort of indicator as to the state of our football team. The problem has nothing to do with anyone other than Guillon, yet some of you folks are quick to jump up and down and scream that it must have been Shula's fault and that this is the sure downfall of Alabama Football.

Hell, one of our very own TideFans administrators had this to say:

if it were a "real life situation" and he was my employee he would have a pink slip

Most people who are even slightly in the know--and especially the players and coaches--realize that Guillon had issues and that the problem was solely with him. Shula was kind enough to let him have a spot on the team at all.

When a player publicly comes out and makes the kind of statement that MG makes, criticism will be warranted. And in this case, you can't expect that it will all be of the positive kind. Had MG not said anything whatsoever, it might be different... but the kid has made his own bed to lie in in the past 24 hours. BTW, you're not reading between the lines in his statement. One... I care about my fellow players; two... I appreciate the fans who are supporting me; three... I left for "self-preservation." If that doesn't just beg for people to put CMS under the microscope for this situation, I don't know what would. However, calling him a "clown" or a "loser" probably isn't the way to go either... but that's going to happen when someone seems to be doing his best to hurt the team right now.

Good point. I can see the Miami thing. Lots of kids get into a program and find it's not the right fit for them. He still had eligibility left and Bama needed a QB at the time. Good move. Now, he quits for the second time in the middle of the season and let's his teammates down. Then choses to comment about it in public. Bad move. All he had to do was make it until January and his life with Alabama football would be done FOREVER. That's not a whole lot of time to suck it up and handle even a bad situation like a man. I'm sure all of us have been through alot worse than playing second string on what we all consider to be the finest college football team on the face of the planet.

The kid will be labeled a quiter whereever he goes. He could probably get hired by a company run by an Auburn grad though.

Mark Guillon has by far the biggest picture on the front or back of the 2006 Media Guide; it's basically the entire back cover, and he also won the Bart Starr award in camp. I wouldn't doubt that the coaches threw him some crumbs to keep him happy all the while knowing that he would never be rewarded with any playing time, only when it benefited the team. Mark Guillon is obviously naive to his place on the team (fans included) and this backfired on all parties. Was the coaching staff at fault in anyway? Not enough information at this point for a fan to conclude. Could have been a result of not nippping a problem in the bud to begin with due to lack of players.

When you mess with trouble you're going to get trouble.
 
My only comment on this is whats the big deal? Seems like a soap opera to me.
So a 2nd string player quit. Happens quite often. Not major news.

(But since i like gossip and innuendo i have read every post :) )

I understand being criticized for doing what he did and for what he said.
My view was and is that it has gone from Criticizing the deed but to criticizing him and his family.
It is no longer about the issue but a chance to do some name calling with people trying to out do each other by coming up with a funnier or worst comment about the boy himself instead of his misdeed.

When any one "reads between the lines" they usually see what they want to see.
That’s why I think that Coach Shula never promised him anything specific but if Gullion "read between the lines" he might have truly believed he was owed something.
I said in an earlier post that I think he might have been moved to 3rd on the depth chart and that is what got him mad enough to quit.

The fans feel betrayed. So the fans react. Marc should have considered this a bit more before he went public. Apparently Marc decided that if he was going to be judged by the fans (and he was being judged before his email went public), at least let the judgement be based on his words and not idle speculation. Unfortunately for everyone, Marc wasn't specific in his complaint - so we still have speculation.

I wonder what might have happened if Marc's email had been more specific. I wonder what the fan reaction might be if they heard what Marc has to say. For this program's sake, I hope that Marc is done with this and that he moves back home and forgets about Alabama. Don't assume that he has no dirty laundry to air...
 
The reality is emotions usually trump character. Six games, four cupcakes and only 12 snaps. Kinda like investing 30 years of your life in a company that ended up bankrupt and you lost all of your 401K. I think this situation is a lingering effect of the probation years. We simply don't have the depth to get a good lead in order to get our 2nd/3rd-stringers any meaningful playing time. I don't blame CMS or MG for this fact.

You don't blame a player for walking out on his teammates? How can you even sound like you equate MG and CMS? there can be no situation where a player should voluntarily walk away from his (or her) team in mid-season...
 
While I thing MG made some decisions that certainly merit critisism, I read this whole post and sometimes am amazed by how much we seem to need to declare our judgement and how slow we can be to offer grace. May our children never make a mistake.

If he was really THAT unhappy, then it is better for him and better for the team for him to move on.

Let him go. If he can't let it go that's his problem.

I agree with what you are saying but MG has a history of letting his mouth get ahead of his brain. I hope he goes on to have a very successful life but he needs to learn how to use some discretion when speaking, especially to the press. We have all put our foot in our mouths at one time or another but it is too much of a habit with MG and it is only going to cause him more problems down the road.
