I have Sirius/XM, Apple Music, and I listen to audio books. I don’t think I have ever set the AM or FM presets for my truck radio.

My best friend DJ’s a rock show every Saturday morning, but I stream it at home or in the truck.

We do listen to FM station 92.3 The Hog in my office. The only time I ever listen to AM is when there is a road sign saying tune to xxxx on your AM dial for traffic information.

The point isn't about casual listening, but emergencies. As AM signals can travel much further than FM, the AM broadcast has long been relied upon as a way to spread official information during emergencies.

I *never* listen to broadcast radio anymore. I literally cannot remember the last time I did. But I do notice those signs on the interstate that tell me which AM station to tune to in case of emergency.

AM radio is essential to my sanity. During the 2016 and 2020 elections, I switched to sports radio full-time because I didn't want to stay constantly angry. It was nice to hear people complaining and arguing about sports - arguments that, in the end, are essentially meaningless.

I used to drive a lot of long distances for work and would listen to a lot of podcasts. Now that I no longer do that I have dropped that but still subscribe to Sirius just to avoid commercials. Not listening to talk radio as they cater to the extremes. If I were limited to local radio I’d drive off a cliff if I tuned into local talk stations.

I'm not an EV evangelist, but I do think it's the future, but goodness - big oil must spend ungodly amounts of money having misleading articles (or articles that *slightly* twist the truth (aka lying)) out there.

same, if I had need for another car an ev would be the absolute best choice. Still kinda mad at myself that I didnt get one of the Nissan Leaf's when our tax incentives essentially made them free

They can’t sunset i the ICE at this point. EV’s are losing them money right now and demand isn’t there for many of the reasons stated above. I’m all for EV’s and plan on purchasing one when my current car is replaced, but they don’t make sense yet for many parts of the country especially if it is very cold.

Or very hot.

EV range degrades materially in hot or cold weather. Partly because the ambient temperature inhibits efficient energy transfer. Partly because you run the AC or heater (depending on the outside weather) and drain power from that.

Everybody understands the AC drain. But the heater is often an afterthought. In ICEs, it’s just harnessing the heat that the engine produces anyway. An EV doesn’t generate anywhere near that sort of heat on its own. So running a heater in an EV is a much bigger additional drain than running a heater in an ICE.

I think buyers would tolerate temperature-induced range reduction if re-fueling stations weren’t so few and so iffy, and if the re-fueling process weren’t so time-consuming.

I can’t find the video but there is an interview with a Canadian trucker explaining how, with today’s tech, EV’s just will not cut it. He explained the overloaded grid, limited battery capacity right now, weight of batteries, and times to recharge.

We really need a happy median: a combination of thrifty ICU’s, hybrids, and EV’s. AND an investment in the grid and upgrading our power plants (I believe nuclear is the answer if you want more EV’s on the road).

I want an EV but will use it as a commuter vehicle or for short trips under 200 miles both ways. I will just have an ICE for longer trips. That will be easy since I can just let my wife drive one.

A 1000W is a friggin TON of power for a bicycle! I ride a prehistoric styled human only powered carbon fiber everything road bike all of the time, and I put out 250W max for long distances. 1000W is a full on max sprint for about 10 seconds for most super in shape riders. 33 mph on flat ground is no joke as well, as that's faster than almost most time trialists.

Just try not to run me over in the bike lanes...

I'm not trying to get into a back an forth, but I used to commute 400 miles round trip in a work day once a week in an EV. It's not impractical, just takes more initial planning than a ICE car. Once you get your system down, it's essentially the same as driving an ICE, plus 10-15 minutes of charging time. EVs can be much less expensive in the long term especially when you consider oil changes, and other types of maintenance that ICE cars require.

And unfortunately for nuclear, until we solve the disposal/storage problem for spent fuel or find a way to commercialize fusion, nuclear energy is never going to be a great long term energy solution. I'm not against nuclear, but nuclear waste is just like coal ash ponds waiting to become a disaster.
