Have you ever had anything stolen from your tailgate on the quad?

We had a cooler and all of the contents stolen during the game yesterday from our tent. This is the first item stolen in several years. I was wondering if other tailgaters had had similiar issues.

I always see groups of people that come into the quad right around kickoff and I assume they are scoping it out for opportunities.

Just coolers and drinks. Just part of the cost of tailgating. If you can't afford to lose some from time to time, don't leave it out during the game.

I am not a tailgater, but have been involved in outdoor events. I am not surprised at your items being taken. We have had different things stolen from annual outdoor Homecoming events at church through the years such as chairs, dishes, etc... Nothing shocks me as to what people steal. I am sorry for your loss.

I am not a "tailgater" simply because of the amount of time and energy needed for it.
That said, I am not surprised, as I have had things go missing from our tent at our son's baseball or soccer tournaments.
As said above, I am not surprised at all. Sorry that it happened to you.

On a similar note, I am amazed that we have never had something snatched from a parked stroller at Disney.

A good number of these instances are 'crimes of opportunity'. Sometimes people that would not walk out of the house with thievery in mind come across something attractive to them with the good chance of not being caught would throw out their aversion and take something that is not theirs. An extreme example of that is looting after a disaster. Some of those people are just plain thieves, others are just taking advantage of a situation. Tailgating thievery is just a softer example of the same action. Still, in the end, someone else pays for the action. The thing is to take away the opportunity as much as possible, lock everything up.(But make sure the bar-b-cue grill is completely shut down, Mayhem is just around the corner:(.)

My motorcycle helmets were stolen a few years ago when the wife and I made a trip for a game. I had permission to park at Publix and tucked the bike in by the apartment building there where my niece was living. We left the helmets sitting on the seat like always. After the game, no helmets. Total pain in the tail, helmet laws and all that. To make it worse it was a night game so not like I could even run to a store and buy a couple. Luckily the Tuscaloosa officer that responded to the call was a rider and had two old helmets at home. Sold them to me cheap and had his wife bring them up to campus for us.

I've been invited before, just wasn't ever able to take part. Kids and alcohol don't mix.

That's odd. I've been all over the University's campus on gameday (for the past 35 years or so) and have NEVER seen a kid drinking alcohol.

In all seriousness, you're painting with a pretty broad brush there. The atmosphere on the Quad is about as family friendly as you're going to find on any college campus. Sure, your kid is going to SEE someone drinking beer, but I don't think that's going to scar them for life. I carried my 9 year old son to the Swamp (first time for either of us to go to Florida) and as we were walking around the stadium, a Gator fan jumps in our face, gives the one finger salute with both hands, and screams, "#$%&*@ Alabama!!" I've never seen anything like that in Tuscaloosa.

No, what I'm saying is the tailgates I've been invited to it was alcohol there hard liquor. I'm not saying the Quad isn't family friendly because it is. We've been out and walked around and threw the ball, but tailgating, the few I've been to I either couldn't make it or hard liquor was involved.

I've never tailgated. I was invited once but wasn't hungry and one time I felt like I hadn't eaten in three days and wasn't invited and ended up spending over a million dollars inside the stadium for hamburgers so I started bringing a sack lunch from Chick fila. That's how I remember it any way.

A few years ago we were tailgating in my father in law's RV. Obviously we had been eating and drinking all day and just left everything out when we went to the game. When we got back, a couple coolers of drinks had been stolen. I was upset, but what can you do...the next morning someone brought the coolers back and left them by the RV. Empty of course. :)

Kids will be fine, especially if they are around responsible adults who can teach them through example the right attitude towards alcohol.

In fact, I would argue that if you want to educate your kids about the perils of alcohol, I would expose them to drunks in settings such as tailgates. Children are very astute, and it can make a huge point seeing an inebriated adult making a complete fool of himself.
