He didn't qualify

Sad but......

I think this is why the staff over-signed so many. I am sure they are aware of the possible attrition rate of a recruiting class. Anyway they are still doing a super job!

:biga2:

As a former public high school teacher

i have to say that anyone who can't qualify academically either has to be mentally handicapped or an undisciplined slob. i taught high school in AL, DE, NJ, and FL, and believe that my labrador retriever could get a diploma in most public high schools. now, the SAT/ACT may be another matter, but most high schools have specifically designed curriculae that would allow a donkey to get a college-eligible diploma. i've gotten to the point that if they can't qualify right out of high school i almost don't even want them, because if they don't have the ability or discipline to fulfill the minimum ncaa requirements then they'll not be much use at the college level. i know there is the occassional "diamond in the rough" who defies the odds, but in general, it's a bad sign if the can't meet the ncaa minimums.

I think it is almost always pure laziness on the recruits part. He has been told how great he is for 4 or 5 years so he quits working in the classroom. It is sad and pitiful at the same time.

He had a 69...

In English, his sophomore year, I think - a core class than cannot be made up in the summer. January is a possibility. TBF, both sides dropped the ball for this not to surface until now...

As much as I would LOVE Travis to play for us...he was >>

destined for a Red shirt anyway! If he is able to get his GPA up, he'll get in by January.

What I have never understood is why an athlete doesn't have the same rights as a normal student to game admission to a university. If somebody had passing grades in all of their classes except one, they could go to a Juco for 3 months, get their grades for a given few classes and be admitted to a university. However, it seems as though if an athlete has trouble with one class they will basically lose 2 years of elgibility because they'll have to play juco ball or go to prep school and have to wait to apply for much longer.

I really don't get it. I personally know people from my HS who failed classes and were not admitted to Bama, went to summer school at Jeff State Jr. College, passed all of the classes with A's or B's and were admitted by the fall and started school with the rest of us. Why can't athletes do the same thing? Where is it written that they MUST play ball and lose eligibility?

They already have it's called elimination of

partial qualifiers. You used to be able to get those into school and work with them to get their grades up. NCAA eliminated that rule, I guess too many kids were getting into college.

Davefrat, I agree with you
...high school has been watered-down so much that anyone who can't pass is truly a dumba##
...and let's be real honest here, how many times has a smart kid ever gotten a school on probation
...it's always the dumba## who can't read and write or has some social problem or always blames someone else for everything wrong in his life
...leave those kind of boys alone
...they're trouble
...besides these kids are told from about the 7th grade on to prepare, pass your classes and still they get to the 12th grade and can't write their name
...why oh why would we want to even think about signing someone like that
...we better leave those kids alone because the ncaa will be waiting for another shot at us...

Lets cut the kid some slack. It sounded like he made a mistake his sophomore year and forgot about it and then his HS counselor and university officials probably didn't do their homework until it was too late. Yes I agree that the HS curriculum is easy but some kids do struggle in individual subjects which doesn't mean their lazy or incompetent. Hopefully our coaches and administration will be more diligent in the future to uncover these problems before its too late.

i'm tired of making excuses for these kids. while the HS counselor is supposed to monitor this stuff, the responsibility falls on the kid and his parents. he knew what was expected and "forgetting" about something so important just shows me that he's undisciplined. would you and your parents have "forgotten" about something this important?

if he's going to forget about something like that, he'd likely forget about ncaa rules as well...forget that going to class everyday is necessary in college...forget that talking to an agent is forbidden...and so on. i taught a few very highly recruited players in different sports during my time as a teacher, and outside of the sports in which there is relatively no big money in the pros (soccer, gymnastics, swimming, track, wrestling) the players in basketball, football, and baseball care only about the sport they play.

one of my students was the #1 high school wrester in america...the best in all the land...he was a fine student and a great kid...when asked, he'd say "because i know that after college, i'll have to go into the real world."

ask that same question of an all-american in the big three and they'll tell you that they plan on playing in the pros. there's a big difference and i'm tired of these kids (see lebron james) who are celebrities before they can vote. the whole system is screwed up beyond belief. i still say that most of these 4 and 5 star players who don't qualify fail to do so simply because they have never had their feet held to the fire because they can hit hard, jump high, and run fast. is it sad? yes. tolerable? to me, no!

df, in general I agree with you and others but my point is that TM will be punished for his actions by not being allowed to enter the UofA until he makes his grades. He doesn't sound to me like the typical jock that can't spell his own name, he only missed qualifying by 1 point (which was still a passing grade) in a sophomore english class. I trust that TM will do what it takes to become eligible and I hope he re-signs with Bama next year. Lets not bash him on a public forum for a mistake that was made as a sophomore and that was overlooked by TM, his parents/guardians, HS counselor, and UofA officials when there was still time to do something about it.

I thought their was to be some sort of standard whereas if you are below in academic standards you are unable to play in HIGH SCHOOL football. guess that rule is not enforced. I here that counselors and parents are getting some of the blame what about the coaches. These coaches are apart of the faculty, they must have been warned unless the kid was just really rowdy.

What about Aaron Johns? was he able to qualify?

tb83, its my understanding that Aaron Johns has qualified and will report with the rest of the freshman. I've never seen him play but from everything I've read, he has a lot of people excited so I am too.
