"It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

The difference being that Christ was speaking of men changing their own focus from worldly possessions to spiritual salvation. He never advocated that the government do it for you. Also note that he did not say it was impossible for those who are rich to enter heaven. You need to read further:
When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

He would help the poor and less fortunate.

Nothing wrong with helping the poor who are down and out and CAN'T provide. Everything is wrong with helping a deadbeat who CAN but WON't provide.

If a man does not work, nor shall he eat. Guess what book that comes from. ;)
