How do you get rid of armadillos?

They are destroying my Dad’s yard. He’s thrown out a bunch of moth balls. Tried live traps. Nothing works. They have plowed his yard in places that there is no way there is any food source left in those places.

Good luck! My dad had a major problem with them and tried everything. He even stayed up one night and shot one with his 20-gauge! Ammo was 40 years old so the birdshot bounced off him.

When he was younger and healthier he sat some motion detectors in his yard that alerted him to their presence and went out and shot them. He’s not in any shape to do that now.

Leave out the torture part, but that works to get crows to leave your freshly planted corn alone.

What has worked for me in the past is to place a havaheart trap where they come out of - their home if you can find it. Open the trap where they come out and block it off so they get forced into the trap. You can use pieces of wood plank and/or concrete block.

You do not need to bait the trap. They wouldn't respond to anything you put inside anyway. The idea is with their poor eyesight they just go into the trap because there's no other route available.

I'd also recommend using a trail camera to help with monitoring what's going on. They're usually moire active in the wee early morning hours.

One of my relatives had a major armadillo problem. He started burying large pvc pipe at an angle and baiting the bottom of it. They could get down but could not get back out. Then bang. Then a pole with a hook to pull them out.

Here's a couple I caught at my Mom's house a few years back. They were under her back deck. One came out and into the trap. No sooner did I set the second trap in place - the second one came right out and into that trap as well....

I used to have two dogs laying in my yard. No problem until they starting taking craps in that area. I sprinkled cayenne pepper out there. Looked out one day and one of them was scratching his back on the ground. It solved the problem. Try something like that, hopefully they wont like it.

They were coming into my yard. Got some grub killer (appears to be what armadillos consider a delicacy) and applied it several times. They haven't been back for 4-5 years and still counting.

Back when we lived out in the middle of nowhere, an armadillo was tearing up our yard. Found a metal cage/trap which he just laughed at. Tried everything. Finally shot him with a Colt 45 1911 with hollow points, and he just looked at us like we were crazy. Took four or five shots with the 45, and was still trying to crawl away as he died. Amazing.
