LOOK AT MY NAME!!!!

This is mainly for current and past Band members.

I sat in the North endzone for the Iron Bowl, near the Auburn Band. I got to noticing that everytime the Bama band played a tune, Auburn's would start right afterwards. I hardly heard our band the entire game, even during Rammer Jammer.

I got to watching the Drum Major (I think that is what he is called, the guy on the ladder leading the band), and he spent the entire time watching our band. When we would raise instruments to play, he would turn quickly and start a cadence. It seemed his sole intention was to interupt our band and drown them out for as many Bama fans as possible.

Now to my question. Is this considered 'rude'? I would figure it would be common courtesy to take turns playing tunes so each fan base could hear their band. Was the Auburn band being cheap in these tactics or is this normal? I ask because this is the first time I've sat near an opposing band and it struck me as odd. When they tried to drown out Rammer Jammer it actually made me mad.

It happens.

In fact, last time the Iron Bowl was in Tuscaloosa, when we'd split the band into all four corners of the stadium, Dr. Ozzello said that every time their band played we were to drown them out. I wouldn't be surprised if they did that this year...

It happens, but it's rude - especially if you're the visiting team.

But what was worse was them playing over our introduction of our SEC Champion track team at the start of the 4th.

Wow, and just two weks ago I learned that India has a Navy!

A couple of years ago I was informed that Mexico has an Air Force.

I think the fact that Auburn has a band is much more shoking !!!!

i was in the MDB for 4 years (2003 season -- 2006 season). we actually do that, too. the purpose is to try to drown out the opposing band so your players can hear you. you don't want your team to only hear the opposition. you have to stay up to try to get your team to stay up.

In high school bands it's very rude, but in BDS, there are many places in the stadium where you can't hear one or both of the bands anyway, so it isn't that bad. Most of the time, the MDB doesn't coordinate when we're going to play versus when the other team plays for that reason. It doesn't matter. The people who can clearly hear one band, probably can't hear the other one at all.

I noticed that they were always playing when we were, but I don't blame them. They didn't want their team to hear 400 people playing Yea, Alabama for the millionth time. The Rammer Jammer thing was stupid of them, though. There was no way their sound would drown out 90,000 people.

After the game, my brother and I ("Tidewater" here on TF) made our way past the Auburn band who were still sitting in the stands. We looked up at them, held up 7 fingers, yelled "7 LOSSES, enjoy staying home for the holidays!". I also yelled, "You guys just got humiliated on national TV! I love it!!!!".

One of the majorettes said to me, "Don't be mean.". I just cackled like a lunatic. So much fun.

I was in JJ, on the end nearest them. With about three minutes left, they started trying to play "It's Great to be an Auburn Tiger." By that time the crowd was so loud I couldn't hear them, nor could I hear their fans. They appeared to be mouthing it... :D

One question: There was a poster on the barn scout board asking if the barner band had played over the game ball ceremony and honering Siran Stacy. Apparently it had been mentioned on a sports talk radio program. Anyone able to confirm or refute the story?

If they did, I didn't notice them. My eyes and most of BDS were focused (through tears) on Siran. I was in section FF behind the team and it seemed as if the AU band was angled directly at us. However, the stadium was so loud that they only way we knew they were playing was when we noticed their horns going up or down. It also helped that the MDB is right across the field from us. The only time I really heard the AU band was when they were on the field at half time.

I was sitting in the section nest to the barn band...and yes...they were very annoying. I don't think they played over Siran but the did play over every presentation between quarters. that really mad me mad and I voiced my opinion. I was in the MDB from '89 - '93. No one was more obnoxious than me, but even I had standards.

btw...their drum line was very good, especially the bass drums.

Well just so you all know...Barn's Band Director is a former MDB Drum Major and UA Grad. He was Drum Major my senior year. Cory Spurlin is his name and yes ladies and gents he has done the full conversion. He was wearing an orange tie on Saturday. I refused to speak to him. Turn Coat....

Don't blame Dr. Spurlin for the "conversion." He is the band director at AU--he MUST wear team colors. He's still an Alabama fan. Had he been given the shot at UA that was intended after Kathryn Scott left, he would be wearing his true colors and the band would have been an entertaining, quality group from 2003 onward. He was shafted, and so he went to LSU (which has a very good school of music) to get his doctorate. He then was offered the job at AU, and I think he has done quite well in his two years there.

The crowd was so loud that most of the time you could hardly hear either band. I sat in the lower north end zone (N-4) and during Rammer Jammer I could not even hear our band at all. I only heard 90,000 Bama fans yelling.

Would not surprise me. 2 years ago at the Iron Bowl, I remember the tigger Band play during the introduction of the surviving (original) members of Lynard Skynard between the 3rd and 4th quarters. This came after the tiggers football squad ran out onto the field before kickoff while the Traditions video was being played.

I can't talk about their lack of class that day because of the bozos in our own student section that day (and last season v. uga).

We were sitting in sec. K and I don't remember hearing the AU band playing while Siran was on the field. That doesn't mean they weren't. I doubt 10 seconds into Siran walking, skipping, and jumping it would have mattered much anyway. The place was rocking. That will forever be one of my most memorable moments at BDS.

I have had two children in the MDB and I did not notice this conduct of playing when the other band starts up until a couple of years ago in Knoxville. Every time out band started to play, the vile band would start rocky top. I thought that this was classless at the time. Because of that start, our band then went to the same thing and now I guess all bands do it.
