Question: In what years were Alabama and Auburn both ranked in the top ten for the Iron Bowl?

I'm really not sure, but I believe the last time both teams went into the game with a chance to win the national championship was 1972.
Both teams were undefeated, we were ranked 3rd and AU 4th. We beat them 31-7 behind Musso. Pat Sullivan had just been announced as the Heisman Winner and we ate his lunch.
That same week #1 Nebraska beat undefeated #2 Oklahoma setting up Bama-Nebraska for the National title in the Orange Bowl.
Nebraska totally kicked our butt in every way possible 38-6. Coach Bryant said it was the best team he ever saw.
Auburn got whipped badly by Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl.
The Big 8 ruled that year. The final poll was Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Colorado.
72 was the punt bama punt game I see someone has already stated this.

1971 --Both Bama and Auburn were undefeated going into the 1971 Iron Bowl--Bama was #3 and Auburn was #5 in Coaches poll. Nebraska was 1 and beat Number 2 Oklahoma a few days earlier. Bama would move to number 2 after the 31-7 win and play number 1 Nebraska.

1972--Blocked punts game. Bama was 2 and Auburn was ranked 9

1989--Bama #2 and Auburn #11

1994--Bama #4 and Auburn #6

2010--Bama #9 and Auburn #2
In 1994 we jumped out to a 21-0 lead. We were set to go up 28-0 early in the 3rd, but Jay Barker threw an interception.
The barn managed to cut the lead to 21-14.
They were driving at the end of the game and got stopped on 4th-down.
It was dubbed "The inch that stole Christmas."

Yeah, that was the Pat Sullivan and Terry Beasley year.

This was the day I became an Alabama fan. I was raised (please forgive me) to be a fan of the Barn since my Dad went to school there. I just knew AU was finally going to win one against Alabama. After that beat down I said that I was now an Alabama fan and would never support that Cow College in any shape, form, or fashion again. I have kept my word, too. When I went to college, I went to Bama. When I drive down I-85 and pass that AU exit on the interstate I roll down my window and spit at it. When my step daughter decided that she wanted to go to vet school I made sure she didn't go that one. She went to North Carolina instead. Roll Tide.

I still have nightmares about the 72 game, it was just another mone of those fluke plays API is known for. But the 2010 was the most painful by far, we had them we knew we had a better team better all around but that team just lost the will to win. It's The game that I hated the most. In OUR house & the paid QB running around with that horse fase smile, but worst of all that team brought Pat Dye back into the picture.
