Could someone explain the difference between the inside-out defensive philosophy and the outside-in defensive philosophy that has been referred to in another thread?

I assume that is has to do with stunting and gap responsibilities of the DL and the blitz routes and pass coverage of the LBs and DBs.

Inside-out wants to force the play to the outside. It lets the play develope then the D runs it down. The sideline become a 12th man. It is not very aggressive. The DEs and OLBs have a lot on their shoulders. they must stay square to the LOS and stretch the play as wide as possible. Blockers are attacked with the outside shoulder.

Outside-in simply forces the play back inside. It attacks the play before it has a chance to develope. The OLBs and DEs mostly contain. The Middle guys shut down anything between the tackles. It opens up a lot of games for the front 7. Blockers are attacked with the inside shoulder.
