Not remotely shocking outside of the normies that think that free games / apps aren't using them as they data set...

143 million people thought they were catching Pokémon. They were actually building one of the largest real-world visual datasets in AI history.Niantic just disclosed that photos and AR scans collected through Pokémon Go have produced a dataset of over 30 billion real-world images. The company is now using that data to power visual navigation AI for delivery robots.Players didn't just walk around with their phones. They scanned landmarks, storefronts, parks, and sidewalks from every angle, at every time of day, in lighting and weather conditions that staged photography would never capture. They documented the physical world at a scale no mapping company with a fleet of vehicles could have replicated on the same timeline or budget.Niantic collected this systematically, data point by data point, across eight years, while users thought the only thing at stake was catching a rare Charizard. The most valuable AI training datasets in the world aren't being assembled in data centers. They're being built by people who have no idea they're building them.

i found it interesting that back during football season i kept seeing a ton of ads for chat gpt that were saying they were good for figuring out what to cook on a first date, or how to do 20 pull ups.

I have to admit. I use ChatGPT a lot. For general knowledge and advice. It does a really good job of suggesting new and unique culinary advice, and exercise.

honestly, i see a lot of it as just google on steroids. i find it pretty annoying how it has been integrated into everything though.
Saw a report recently about Elon Musk new business focusing on manufacturing humanoid robots. Due to China's insurmountable lead in robot technology Musk will be forced to purchase components in China and attempt to sell them in the US for triple the cost of what they are in China. This is the same model of Tesla that sell for triple the cost of a comparable BYD model. The main point appears to be humanoid robots performing repetitive task for assembly of products or warehouse functions at Amazon and similar warehouse operations.

China has made significant progress in operating driverless vehicles in mining operations through a Huawei network that manages the operation.

This type of technology in manufacturing and back office operations is definitely where they are coming for your job. Unfortunately with our educational system most of the jobs of the future will be in Asia.

BYD is eating everyone else's lunch across the world, where electrics are viewed much more favorably than the US. Tesla is no match for them with their focus on low cost and government subsidies via the wily ways of the CCP.

Across the board, when we should be using (relatively low cost for the downstream benefits) government grants and our university system for continuing to advance and help American industry in these areas, we are pulling back and ceding the lead to China. Renewable technologies are going to be a massive global market and we are forcing coal plants to stay open when they are not competitive...

If I was going to determine what any Chinese product should cost to build and deliver such as a BYD Model I would put a team on the project that would include a sourcing expert, design engineers and manufacturing engineers to understand the cost to build and the capital investment required to build a competitive car from a price and feature standpoint. We would absolutely know then what subsidies are involved in China.

We have always complained about it but it has been a political talking point while we sat back and allowed China to hallow out our workforce.

While Trump is fighting against wind power and solar power and is slow to support modular Nuclear power China is developing a practically insurmountable lead in renewable energy.

Exactly... Downstream we are going to regret so many things being done now. They have basically destroyed the NIH and will soon cause severe harm to academic medical research. These are the researcher who sort out the basics and find new ideas and the underpinnings of how new medical therapies can be developed. Private companies generally take these ideas and develop them for the market, but much less commonly spend that much on basic research.

A Tennessee grandmother spends months in jail after facial recognition wrongly links her to crimes in North Dakota, despite evidence she was never there.

Charges collapsed within minutes of questioning.

I put this here because my understanding is that this was AI-assisted software. If this doesn't freak you out at least a little, you are one hard son of a gun to intimidate.

I think it is extremely concerning... The repercussions need to be serious.

I was told about a movie available on Prime Video called Mercy. Apparently, the premise that AI data will be as effective as DNA in matching a suspect to a crime because it will be impossible for a person to not leave a digital journey. Anyway, the suspect has 90 minutes to prove his innocence and then he swiftly convicted and executed.

Just found out today that the program I use to do architectural drawings (Revit) is introducing AI with the 2027 version. Probably won't be long before I want be needed for drawing. The 2027 version comes out later this month.
