Is Blake Sims ready to step in if AJ were to be unavailable?

Are there any regular practice observers that feel qualified to rate Blake Sims passing ability? I think we all feel confortable with his running skills.

One of the rare seasons it seems where the most popular man on campus isn't the backup QB. I don't think he could fill A.J.'s shoes by any means but I believe we would be functional with Sims behind center.

I hope it doesn't come to that, but I feel much more at ease knowing that we have a coach who will not stop at finding a way to coach our boys to win anything. A QB injury with Saban in charge is far better than a QB injury with John L. Smith at the helm.

Obviously no QB injury is the preference, but when all else fails, we have the Saban factor.

Sims left, Sims right, Sims up the middle. If that don't work just hand it off...We will not be stopped...
Not to mention the last option. When they stack the line to stop the run, Blake can pass.
Short to mid-range passes can win games.
Right now half the teams in the SEC would love to have a 'Blake Sims' type who can run and throw.
(He's just height challenged, and might not have a major league arm.)
We've had several QBs that weren't as talented.

If we need a man with a cannon for an arm, there's always Ealy, he's green, but has talent and he's still learning.

I think if it were necessary, BS at QB would add such a different wrinkle to our offense it would make it even more difficult to stop, in the short term...

Blake is a much better passer than most people realize. I remember watching him a couple years ago at A-Day and I he looked very good passing, and not just on short passes either. His running ability is unquestionable. He's averaging 7 yards per rush with a TD. Last year, he caught a couple of passes. He's 3/3 on passing for 50 yards.

Assuming the RBs and the OL are healthy, Blake can step in and provide a spark, even if AJ is healthy. It's valid to question if Alabama could do everything on offense it might want to, or if Ely might be a better replacement if AJ were to miss more than few quarters, but I don't think there is any question that Alabama could move the ball with Blake.

I'll second this. He's got enough speed to make things happen if needed. Even if he threw a screen pass or three he'd be able to move the chains.

I do not think we would be quite as good in the passing game, but we'll be better in the running game. Blake can run the zone read which adds another dimension to out attack.

I believe if Sims had to come into the Tennessee game for instance that his unique skills and the offensive variations they have prepared to use with him at quarterback he could guide us to victory. The problem comes if he had to start multiple weeks. With his passing ability being an unknown Alabama would be somewhat one dimensional and would much resemble the LSU offense last season.

I look for us to break out Sims in a game where we may be having a little trouble moving the football alah maybe LSU or anyone for that matter. He can run the zone read option and can pass as well. It is a good change up to have in a time of need and I also think he and Elly can be effective if they have to be in relief of AJ. (I just hope we don't have to find out)

It's not like he would be a liability in the passing game, I remember being very impressed with his passing ability in his recruiting vids. Plus he's being coached up a lot better now than in HS.

One thing is for sure, he's no Kiehl Frazier. :p_green: .com

This. Just look at our offense when he's doing the mop-up duty. His ability to run the read-option is a nice wrinkle that AJ doesn't run because he isn't mobile enough.

Not sure our passing game would be really affected by Sims stepping in for an injured AJ. For whatever reason, Bama has not gone deep much this year; the reason most likely revolves around the need to go deep has not been present. Blake can hit the short passes and can go deep if needed (did so in 2011 A-Day). Would he have an easier time going deep because the safeties would come up to stop the handoff or read-option?

This is a great comparison and came to my mind as well. When LSU changed quarterbacks against Alabama the first game, it actually worked relatively well. This was primarily because Alabama wasn't as well prepared for it. LSU tried it again in the championship game and we know how that went. It ultimately was less effective once the novelty wore off.

AJ is highly competent and once has to assume long term, any change would be a downgrade. However, I do think a short term boost is quite possible. I also think that Blake could lead Alabama to victory over any opponent on their schedule, but there would obviously be a greater risk. If nothing else his inexperience could lead to turnovers.

Maybe Bama would be like 2011 LSU. However, how does Blake's passing compare to Jordan Jefferson's passing? If Jefferson could pass, LSU would have had a nice offense. We haven't seen a great deal of Blake's passing to judge.

I agree...I feel much more comfortable about our back-up situation now after having watched BS play. He's had positive plays and sustained drives nearly every time he's been in the game.
