Well, the Israelis took down Tehran's proxies in Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis. With Iran's air defenses down, this was the time to strike.
If Tehran gets a nuke, they would probably use it against Israel and even if the do not use it, it would change the balance of power in the Gulf of Arabia. The Saudis would start developing their own bomb.

Statement by the Israel Defense Force about tonight’s strikes against Iran:

“A short while ago, following the directive of the political echelon, the IDF launched a preemptive, precise, combined offensive based on high-quality intelligence to strike Iran's nuclear program, and in response to the Iranian regime's ongoing aggression against Israel. A short while, dozens of IAF jets completed the first stage that included strikes on dozens of military targets, including nuclear targets in different areas of Iran.

The public is requested to follow the instructions of the IDF Home Front Command, which will be updated as necessary, and act calmly and responsibly. The IDF and the relevant authorities are prepared for a wide range of scenarios in defense and offense that may be needed.

For years, the Iranian regime has been waging a direct and indirect campaign of terror against the State of Israel, by funding and directing terrorist activities via its proxies across the Middle East, while advancing toward obtaining a nuclear weapon. The Iranian regime is at the head of the axis responsible for all terrorist attacks against the State of Israel since the beginning of the "Swords of Iron" War, including by arming and funding the Hamas terror organization which was responsible for the October 7th Massacre. During the "Swords of Iron" War, Iran even directly attacked Israel twice, firing hundreds of missiles toward the State of Israel.

The Iranian regime has proclaimed that its objective is to destroy the State of Israel. Senior officials in the Iranian regime have publicly declared their intent to destroy Israel, and are operating to achieve this together with their proxies in the Middle East. Today, Iran is closer than ever to obtaining a nuclear weapon. Weapons of mass destruction in the hands of the Iranian regime are an existential threat to the State of Israel and a significant threat to the wider world. The State of Israel will not allow a regime whose objective is to destroy the State of Israel to obtain weapons of mass destruction.

The IDF has conducted a process of preparations for a campaign on the frontline and on the home front. The resilience of Israel's citizens will be an important factor of the campaign.

The IDF is ready to continue to act as required. The State of Israel has the obligation to act in defense of its citizens and will continue to do so everywhere it is required to do so, as we have done in the past.

The IDF is conducting an ongoing situational assessment and will update on any developments.”

According to Axios, the Trump Administration has informed Israel that the United States will not directly participate in any kind of military strikes against nuclear facilities in Iran, though officials did not clarify if that included indirect support such as intelligence and aerial-refueling for Israel’s Air Force. Analysts believe that without U.S. participation, an Israeli operation against Iran’s nuclear enrichment sites would likely be limited, possibly requiring several days of bombing due to the Israeli Air Force not maintaining any kind of long-range strategic bomber like the U.S. Air Force’s B-2 or B-52. These bombers would be needed for their ability to carry large “bunker buster” bombs such as the GBU-57A/B MOP (Massive Ordnance Penetrator) that would likely be required in order to hit Iran's primary facility for enriching weapons-grade uranium, the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant (FFEP), which is built into a mountain over 80–90 meters underground near Qom.

Reports that in addition to Iran’s Chief of General Staff, Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Israel also targeted the Commander-in-Chief of the IRGC, Hossein Salami and the Commander of the IRGC’s Aerospace Forces, Amir Ali Hajizadeh, in tonight’s strikes against the Iranian capital of Tehran.

As we used to say on the playground, the Israelis…..they don’t play.

Their calculus is, “Will our opponents hate us any more than they already do? Will they respect us any less than they already do?” If the answer to either is “No,” they do what they feel they have to do.

Those are some guys who believe in what they’re doing. Whether you agree or disagree with their actions, you have to admire their conviction.

The Iranians have had this coming since the late 1970’s. They can’t have a nuclear weapon….ever.
I seem to remember another pre-emptive strike about 15 years ago. Could have been 20. Took out some "judiciously chosen" targets and stopped Iranian uranium enrichment in its tracks. The Israelis do what they have to do to protect themselves.

Those are some guys you don't want to cross. Think Hamas has conviction? Maybe they do. The Israelis have conviction, military superiority, and world class training. They are some formidable [guys].

No attacks on Fodo, the buried heart of the nuclear program, listed, unless they're including it with Teheran. I've always thought the way to go was several consecutive MOPs (Massive Ordnance Penetrator) 30K bombs first, followed up with a couple of MOABs. All they have is, recently, the MOAB, which will only do away with shallow facilities. They can deliver the MOAB with a C-130, which they have, but which would be hard to get through Iran's air defenses. The MOP must be delivered by a B-2 (or kluged onto a B-52 or B-1). Of course, they have none of these and I doubt seriously we get sucked in far enough to use our own. We have many B-2s on Diego Garcia, and, I'd bet, if we do get involved, we'll be burying some MOPs up the entrance to Fodo, followed by a MOAB or two...

I've related this recently, but after the initial days of the 1967 War, my next door neighbor, a former Nazi, came running over with a newspaper, pointing out the Israeli tank victories and proclaimed in his thick German accent - "Look at that! As good as any stormtrooper!" He had a hard time accepting that Jews could fight and fight well...

We’re fortunate to have you, 81, tidewater and several more that have the knowledge of the inner workings of military. Me thinks Iran is getting dealt with.

Can you imagine living knowing that could and probably would happen to you? Good Lord.

That would be like me showing up at a tailgate in Titletown AL and saying “I’m not participating in pregame beer drinking.”
