Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA

Or you can compare that to kids from North Carolina and Miami, for example, who were given bans that in some cases were for the entire year, or who were declared permanently ineligible for college athletics.

Really an open menu for the NCAA, and they can do whatever they want. Restitution will be part of it, but the length of the suspension is really up for grabs.

And you would think they wouldn't be lenient because of his status. They could use him as an example for other players. But with the NCAA you never know and it could just blow over.

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA

Based on reading the article and the follow-up tweets from Schad, it seems fairly apparent that ESPN does not actually have the video. As such, unless the video surfaces, I don't think this amounts to much of anything. By the broker's own admission, it's a cash transaction, so no paper trail (unless Manziel was dumb enough to deposit it into his bank account shortly thereafter, and it doesn't seem like he was that dumb; in all likelihood he made cash purchases with the money). And if the broker is not cooperating with the NCAA, his statements are essentially useless, because, again, it's all just hearsay to a third-party sportswriter.

If the video turns up, Manziel is in a lot of trouble. If not, this is all wasted virtual trees.
Johnny probably knows not to put the money in his bank account. What about Uncle Nate, though? Easy bank account to dump the money into.

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA

I'm not referring to what the NCAA's manual says or doesn't say. It's just my gut feeling on the whole deal. You know more about these things than I do, so I defer to you, but still I have doubts that this goes anywhere.
You may be right that this does not go anywhere, but admittedly as time drags on in this deal things just keep looking worse and worse for Manziel. More dealers continue to pop up, and we are seeing a seepage of videos and photographs (which are always part and parcel of the autograph business as the dealer tries to authenticate the signatures). It seems at this point like this was not an isolated incident for him, but a more standard course of conduct. If that's true, the likelihood of something coming along to trip him up grows exponentially.

ESPN has acknowledged the tapes exist; If somebody like TMZ buys them, that could be enough. NCAA isn't a court of law, they just need enough to make a determination that he violated the rules.

This is also in addition to the alleged signings mentioned in the recent article.
If it's HBO, then maybe not.

That's going to be the hook, CC. A legitimate news organization (or one, like ESPN, that tries to pretend that it is even when it's not) isn't going to pony up cash to purchase these videos, but someone will. Outlets like TMZ, Buzzfeed, Deadspin, etc., would all be very interested in this.

The real question here is whether or not the broker really intends to try to sell this thing. He claims now that he is not, but I tend to doubt that. If this thing is placed on the market, you can rest assured that eventually it will find a buyer.

I think if you check those rims on his Merc you might find the money, if daddy really needed new wheels...

If Johnny doesn't play, I see the A&M game being like the Arkansas 2012 game when Tyler Wilson didn't play, even though they lost to ULM a week earlier, it was still expected to be a competitive game.

Yup, *IF* Johnny Hangover doesn't play, it will be ugly.

there is a quota on the amount they allow to be repaid I believe. I don't think 7500 dollars worth of illegal benefits can just be paid off to the NCAA.

I think we've been down this road before. Remember the "bagman"?
Maybe the "bagman" has the "video" and Joe Schad can partner with Danny Sheridan and tell all...hahahaha

Much ado about nothing. The NCAA has lost all their bite since they got carried to court by Miami. Look for Johnny Hangover to get what Cam Newton got. NOTHING! Personally I want him to play so the whiners won't have any excuses, like Notre Dumb.

I expect we'll see those videos on TV no later than tomorrow night. An "autograph broker" could make his retirement off this deal.

Well, they may truly not be for sale - if I've read correctly, CT (where this recording was allegedly made) is a two-party recording state, meaning both parties being recorded have to be aware of being taped. IANAL, but assuming that's true I'd think if this tape got out of the broker's hands he'd be opening himself up to some serious litigation, and Manziel's family has almost certainly already made him aware of their plans should he sell it.

It really depends on who buys them. aTm and the Manziels have enough money to stop this.

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA

The reality is this whole episode has given Sumlin and Texas A&M the opportunity to handle JM however they want with all of his antics over the offseason as "conduct detrimental to the team". If they dont suspend him, it will only be because 1) they are getting some serious pressure from booster interests, or 2) they dont really want to have a program viewed with integrity.

After all that has played out with JM, he has made himself expendable. How much more does A&M really expect to wring from the JM hype machine other than a run at the national title which is looking like a long shot now?

Sumlin and Hyman can look no further than to what happened to Chizik and Jacobs in the aftermath of Cam Newton. Sure you may win the NC - but it will be a hollow victory. Its pretty difficult to overcome insulting the intelligence of virtually every college football fan in the nation in the process.

If I am them, I dont want to gamble the integrity of my institution, my career, and my future earning potential over this situation. Coach Stallings basically said this morning on JOX that Sumlin will be held accountable at some point in the future for how he deals with this situation...
