LGBTQ Issues: Will We Choose Love and Acceptance or Hate and Oppression? (Part 2)

An Alabama public library mistakenly added a children’s picture book to a list of potentially inappropriate titles because the author’s last name is “Gay,” the library’s director said.

“Read Me a Story, Stella,” a children’s picture book by Canadian author Marie-Louise Gay, was added to a list of books flagged for potential removal from the children’s section of the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library because of “sexually explicit” content.

But the book, which is about a pair of siblings reading together and building a dog house, should not have been on the list and was only added because of the keyword “gay,” Cindy Hewitt, the library’s executive director told AL.com on Sunday.

My MIL is a public librarian back in AL.

She has had to pull the book "To Kill a Mockingbird" from the shelves and place it behind the counter so that only adults can access it.

Due to a change in policy for library funding in AL, libraries will have to pull books deemed "inappropriate for children".

This is simple censorship.

This is happening across conservative states.

A bill failed this year in AL that would criminalize librarians and a new bill with supposedly clarified language has been filed for 2025.

This issue (republican censorship) should probably get its own thread.

I don't see how To Kill a Mockingbird can be legitimately pulled from shelves. It's an American classic. But do you think some topics are best left out of schools? Are some subjects not appropriate for elementary-aged children?

You ever met someone considered smart that was dumb as a rock?
If you think Elon Musk is dumb as a rock you should really reconsider some of your standards for determining such things. As I said earlier, I get not liking his politics, and fair enough to that, but the guy is obvious very intelligent. Anyone putting that thought forward is either just being hyperbolic or dishonest.

Can you explain how Musk is a moron? I get not liking his politics, but the guy is certainly not a moron.
I've never heard of someone stupid becoming the richest man on the planet while radically changing multiple industries.

But remember, in a binary world if you don't agree with someone that means they are inferior in some way.

Sure. Playboy/Penthouse/porn rags should not appear in children's sections/schools along with other explicit and graphic books intended to get a rise out of folks. You know it when you see it.

But we are talking about PUBLIC libraries here and these efforts are nothing but censorship aimed at keeping unfavored IDEAS from the PUBLIC, including children.

Ironically, a public library in Prattville pulled 1984.

What happened to those defending free speech?

Were they lying all along?

Or did they really just support speech they liked all along?

There are different kinds of intelligence.

Some leads to making money and getting rich.

Some is technical.

And so on.

Musk's social intelligence is lacking.

Speaking of binary worlds:

Rich=intelligence?

Interesting take.

Also, a blind spot here about binary worlds in a thread about LGBTQ+.

At least now you are making some type of differentiation instead an obviously ridiculous statement.

So, some form of censorship is appropriate.

The devil is in the details. I would not want my daughter exposed to sexually explicit material of any sort while in school. I also wouldn't want her to learn history via books written by some right wing or left wing author. I can't blanket praise or condemn what is taking place in public schools and libraries. Some of the censorship is ridiculous; some is appropriate IMO.

Thanks for clarifying to the point you were willing to do so.
My point is it's impossible that Elon has earned the wealth to be considered the richest man on the planet whilst being stupid. It's simply not possible for an unintelligent person to do that. I don't consider his wealth to be a measure of his character, nor do I agree with him on all of his views, but it's silly to suggest someone who has forever changed the auto, space, and banking industries is stupid.

We have used neutral standards in the past.

I used the examples purposely, because prurient material in the past had neutral application.

Now it has become a tool to bludgeon ideas some people don't like instead of focusing on truly prurient materials.

And To Kill a Mockingbird is not being pulled for that reason, but because of matters related to race and its place and history in society (and probably because it has the n-word, or at least that is a likely excuse).

What happened to parent's rights?

Freedom of speech?

Same for Mark Twain, IIRC, which I find a stupid reason to censor.
