I read the 4 book series about a year ago, and wanted to reread the original. I just stopped in the local used book store and picked up a hard back copy for $4. I mentioned to the lady that I had checked on the internet, and a first edition goes for about $160. She opened it up....and sure enough, mine is a first edition. Now if I could just get it signed.

PCB, that book was recommended to me by my mother not long after it came out. I hate to think how long ago...what is the publication date?

I have always considered it to be among the best five books I have ever read, along with To Kill a Mockingbird, Lord of the Rings, and the entire Aubrey Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian.

Like many books that I love, I have read it more than once. (three times, I think).

What a lucky find, to get it in a first edition! I think $160 is a dream, unless it is in fabulous shape, including the original sleeve; but I bet you could get 75 bucks for it in a heatbeat.

But read it first! It is truly a great book (Pulitzer Prizewinner).
