Macho Man Randy Savage killed in auto accident

Macho Man was one of the greats. Yeah, he had his demons, and they were numerous (Drug problems in his past, which caused severe paranoia in regards to when he was legitimately married to Miss Elizabeth. Their relationship was far from stable), but he was one of the most entertaining performers that came out of wrestling's boom phase in the 1980's.

Most wrestling fans point to the match he had with Ricky Steamboat at Wrestlemania III in front of 93,000 in the Silverdome as one of the greatest matches of all time. Before the match, Savage insisted he and Steamboat script out every single move, even the collar and elbow tie-up, which is how every match opens. Steamboat always thought this was odd, but they had notebooks with the entire match laid out, and to their credit, they absolutely stole the show that night.

He went on to win the WWF Championship at Wrestlemania IV, even though he wasn't slated to do so. The belt was supposed to go to Ted DiBiase to set him up against Hulk Hogan (who had to take time off to film No Holds Barred). A lot of back stage stuff happened, and Savage ended up the with the strap and the top spot in the company as they teamed him with Hogan and did a slow heel turn for the Wrestlemania V main event.

He'd remain one of their top performers for years until jumping to WCW. He also became more of a mainstream star with his Slim Jim commercials. Unfortunately, the WWE has basically disowned him, outside of doing a DVD project, not involving him directly, and action figures. It's said Vince McMahon has harbored a huge grudge against him for some reason (Rumors point all different directions and all of them being quite scandalous), but a lot personally believe it's because Savage, unlike a lot of old timers, just didn't need McMahon. He apparently had saved his money and was content doing his own thing.

Sad to hear about his passing. I know I'll be snapping into a Slim Jim tonight in his honor.... OOOOOHHHHH YEAH!

My oldest son love wrestling and all the famous ones like hulk, macho man, bam bam, and also andra the giant. I have seen all these bringing my son to matches and can say it wasn't just kids that loved this stuff but a large number of adults to. One thing I can say is these guys are huge and look alot smaller on tv. RIP Macho Man.

How old is your son? I mean, Andre the Giant died like 18 years ago.

I really enjoyed it when he was a heel in WCW as part of the nWo. When he first came to WCW in 1994, I was skeptical and really wondered how that was going to work. I just didn't see his Macho Man persona fitting in to WCW like it had in WWE. But, when he turned heel and joined the nWo in 1997, it was very entertaining. He played a great heel. I wish Macho could have had one more run in WWE. I would have loved to have seen a Vince vs. Macho Man match at a Wrestlemania ppv.

Roddy Piper tweeted that the source of the bad blood between McMahon and Savage is that Savage slapped Vince in a bar one night. I'd be willing to buy that, but some still believe it goes far deeper than that (Won't repeat it here, but if you do some looking... you'll find what's considered the "leading" rumor for the bad blood).

But again, Savage didn't need McMahon anymore. Nothing eats at Vince more than that.
