Meh, I'll give him a pass on this one. It was germane to the conversation.
I WON'T give him a pass because:
a) there's no comparison between losing a QB at the END of a season when you're in a title game and losing one in the FIRST GAME of the season.......besides, Oklahoma lost Troy Aikman as their QB and went on to win a national title that same year in 1985; better yet, Colorado lost Darian Hagan during the title game in 1990 and still won the championship.
b) he could have played Gilbert in a bunch of their blowout wins that year, but he didn't; Gilbert threw 26 passes in 2009 prior to throwing 40 against us - and Texas won seven games by over 30 points, so......it's Mack's fault
c) I would have worked in a reference to "well, this could make a huge difference because in all honesty, Oklahoma losing Sam Bradford in the opener (e.g. relevant) to BYU in 2009 might well have cost them the Big 12 title" - indeed, that's a perfect reference with him sitting there to say it FIRST and all but dare him to bring up Colt
d) the announcer then went on to say that Gilbert played well and Mack agreed, though he did acknowledge four turnovers.....except Gilbert didn't play well at all. He was 15 of 40 for 186, 2 TDs, 4 INT - and 72 of those yards came on two plays, TD tosses to Shipley.
So no, he gets no pass from me. If this were the title game and he referenced it, I'd admit he had a point - but seriously, this is insane.
