Not sure what to make of this.
An American woman and a man in Colombia as tourists. Muggers attack the woman (it seems trying to steal her mobile phone). The man, amazingly, retreats and leaves the woman to her own devices. Unrelated bystanders intervene to save the woman and arrest the perp.
First, my advice for young women is, if the young man with whom you are keeping company does this, find a new young man to keep company with. You want someone who will protect you in a crisis. This guy ain't it.
Next, I'm curious about the thinking of the young man. There's been a lot of talk in society about "toxic masculinity" so maybe this guy had been taught (and internalized) the idea that protecting women is an example of toxic masculinity so he just retreated when danger read its head leaving the woman to her own devices. Maybe he is simply a coward. Either way, he has some soul-searching to do.
I think it is a man's duty in such cases to protect the woman with him. That does not excuse exercising violence against the woman or other abusive behavior towards women in other contexts, but in this context, it is his duty to intervene to protect her.
