Mark Richt on UGA committing so many penalties

Sometime late in the game Gary and Verne mentioned UGA always being one of the most penalized teams. They went on to say that Richt suggested that it's not a problem. What coach would think that way? Can you imagine Coach Saban saying that committing a lot of penalties is not a problem? The Dawgs are always loaded with talent. Talent isn't the reason they can't get over the hump. Mark Richt will not win a national title if he continues to field an undisciplined team. And I wonder how many of his starters will be suspended for the first game or two next season?

He's the type of coach that allowed/encouraged his WHOLE team to leave the sideline and go stomp on UF's logo after a TD...and gladly took a penalty for it.
So what does that say about his character and setting a "good" example for his players? I think we all know the answer...

Yeah I remember that. The Dawgs went on to win that day. But I lost what respect I did have for Richt after learning that he encouraged his team to rush onto the field after the first td of the game.

Mark Richt is a great guy.
I remember he paid his assistants out of his own pockets because he felt they were not being compensated enough. Truth is, not many people would've done that.
And he didn't tell him to stomp UF's logo, specifically. He told them to get excited. And it worked. They won that game and they finished the season extremely well. That was a genius coaching move.

Yea, those penalties cost GA the game. But I felt Saban messed up too. The fake FG... Timeout should've been called. The play before halftime... Timeout should've been called.
No coach is perfect. Saban is just better than Richt.

Not to start a debate, but I think Bear Bryant said at times that penalties did not matter.

I don't see why this thread is necessary. Don't criticize Richt's coaching. I doubt any of us have a clue what it takes to be one. Georgia, their coaches, and their players have all been very successful this season. Saying they need to be more disciplined, you would do this/that instead of what Richt is doing, and so on, is just pointless.

One time a player had two 15 yard penalties. He yanked the player aside and told him he could play for 4 years and not be worth costing Alabama 30 yards.

I think he had a serious problem with players committing penalties.

On Richt - That's how he gets a step up in his talent. They're Georgia, they'll always get good players, but he's slid up a step by letting them run wild. Those penalties end up costing them games.

Honestly, that game was only close on the scoreboard because of some bad ref calls. The Lacy TD that wasn't, the non-PI call... 11-18 point swings. Suddenly not a very close contest.

It is true that the "undisciplined" attitude of Georgia has done them harm more times than not. It is not pointless to point it out because it certainly is their process and part of the reason they are not on the way to Miami.

Me too. I also think that was the beginning of UGA's streak of being the most penalized team in the SEC. He lost his players that day, and has yet to get them back.

I followed Coach Bryant all those years from Day 1 and never heard or read anything about his condoning penalties. Penalties will get you beat!

Coach Richt appears emotionally detached and his team plays that way, and it cost them. I suppose penalties is part of it. I have never seen a Bama team make as many crucial mistakes (5) and still win the game. The interception on the 5 yard line, blocked FG for TD, clock management on both the fake punt and before half, AJ's fumble after something coming in late from the sideline and a couple more. If I was a Georgia fan and had the game gift wrapped for me by blown calls and Bama blunders(uncharacteristic), I would be pretty mad about not spiking the ball and running two pass plays at the end of the game.

Georgia was soft and has always been soft under Richt, and it came through as the night wore on. When the game ended, Georgia was physically and emotionally spent.

Saban is better than Richt because of one word: Discipline. It's at the core of Saban's philosophy, whereas Richt hasn't yet figured out what it means.

I don't think coach said that. maybe penalties for defensive aggressiveness
"You couldn't play four years and be good enough to cost the University of Alabama thirty yards!"
An irate Coach Bryant to a player who had just received his second fifteen yard penalty of the game.

Exactly, penalties is like ground zero of undisciplined. He got it arse backwards.
