#1 Rebels dump Cherokee County
Emma Sansom coach Kevin Troup changed tactics at halftime and it obviously worked, as the Rebels, ranked No. 1 in Class 4A, ran by Cherokee County, 68-50, in the Area 11 Tournament Saturday night in boys high school basketball.
Emma Sansom owned a 34-25 lead at the break.
"We were settling too much for jump shots in the first half," Troup said. "At halftime, I stressed getting more up-tempo and getting the ball inside more."
The Rebels had 20 assists and 17 steals in the game.
"I thought we did a good job of distributing the ball tonight," Troup said. "And we played solid defense."
Jamel Foster led the Rebels with 18 points, six assists and four steals. Jackie Collins had 16 points and eight boards. Antoine Sandridge had 12 points, eight boards and six assists and Jabriel Lowe scored 10 points.
Julius Thrash pulled down six rebounds and dealt out six assists and Reginald Marbury had five steals and six boards.
"It's bad enough being a No. 4 seed in these tournaments," said Centre coach Tommy Lewis. "But in this area, you have to play the best No. 1 seed in the state."
Centre was led by the 17 points of Webb Lyons and Reggie Dupree's 10.
The Warriors hit 10-of-27 3-pointers in the game.
"Cherokee County is so good at shooting 3s," Troup said. "I've preached all year for our guys to help out on defense with whoever has the ball. But if you help against Centre, they'll hit you with a 3.
"I told them tonight that everyone was responsible for his own man."
