National media at the game have been convinced

The bylines of "Auburn, AL" indicate those in the media who were at the game--and they appear to have been thoroughly convinced of the worthiness of the Tide.

SI's Andy Staples:

The chief argument against Alabama is that it will not win its conference. Actually, the Crimson Tide didn't even win their own division. Here's the problem with that argument. Alabama would have won the ACC. Alabama would have won the Big East. Alabama would have won the Big Ten. Alabama would have won the Pac-12. Alabama would have won the Big 12. When Alabama and LSU helped found the SEC in 1932, it's safe to assume they didn't envision a day 79 years in the future when their shared interests and geographical proximity would be the chief reason why they shouldn't be considered the two best teams in the country -- even though they are the two best teams in the country.

ESPN's Gene Wojciechowski:

The scoreboard said Bama 42, Your Defending National Champions 14, but the Crimson Tide -- and the Tigers, too -- know the 28-point margin didn't describe the full width and breadth of this rout. It wasn't mercy-rule bad, but Auburn was never truly in this game.

This might seem like sacrilege, but this latest edition of the Iron Bowl was more glorified scrimmage than something worth bookmarking on your Bama-Auburn greatest hits list. It was necessary, but it wasn't memorable -- not in the way last season's Tigers-comeback-for-the-ages was memorable.

No, this was the ultimate business trip for Bama. The Crimson Tide made its sales call to the Loveliest Village on the Plains, closed the BCS deal and returned to Tuscaloosa, where they'll begin the countdown to Jan. 9.

Yahoo's Pat Forde:

In the climactic Apollo Creed-Rocky Balboa fight scene in “Rocky,” the fighters clung to each other after the bell in mutual admiration and exhaustion.

“Ain’t gonna be no rematch,” Creed mumbled.

“Don’t want one,” Rocky responded.

Yet they made “Rocky II,” and they fought again.

And now football imitates cinema.

Thanks for compiling that. Seems ESPN is pumping us in the MNC and CBS is pimping somebody else. Politics in play here for whatever self serving purpose.

For me I want to see a heavyweight fight for the championship. Bama and LSU are the 2 heavyweights (there is no one else). It would be a slugfest and probably the most watched game of the century. Any other matchup is a battle between a middleweight and a heavyweight.

The only dog in the fight CBS has left this year is the SEC Championship. ESPN would want an Alabama/LSU rematch because they know it will do a monster cable rating.

After the negotiations between the two networks over the first game, it seems ESPN is going to get an Alabama/LSU game after all. I imagine CBS isn't too happy about it, although there is nothing they can do about it.

Dick Weiss of the New York Daily framed the voters' issue perfectly:

"The voters in the Coaches and Harris polls will have two-thirds of the final say on who plays for the national title and will once again have a chance to make a statement about the way the matchup is determined. They can either vote for the two best teams or decide that a team needs to win its conference to play in the biggest of games."

I've seen nothing but positive pub from articles and tv since our beatdown of *ubarn, saying LSU and BAMA are clearly the best two teams and it shouldn't be close.
I think there is a contingent of voters out there that won't like the matchup but they should realize OSU blew it at the wrong time to the wrong team. They were ahead of Bama sitting in the cat-bird seat and lost to an unranked team late in November. The same team that just got blown out by OU yesterday.
So OSU's resume isn't looking all that strong right now.

More national media love.

Hightower said LSU’s 9-6 overtime victory stings more because of how well the defense played. Alabama smothered LSU for most of the night, allowing no touchdowns, 239 offensive yards and forcing two turnovers.

“It hurts,” he said. “We played probably one of the best defensive games we’ve played all year against those guys. We were just one or two big plays away.

“Hopefully, we’ll be able to get those guys back in the national championship.”

The countdown to redemption has begun.
I really like that last part. :biggrin2:

Well with the AP Top 25 poll keeping Bama at #2 all of today's updated polls like Bama as the second best team in the country.

Now we just need to hold our breath until the updated BCS rankings come out. If the new BCS has Bama at #2 and the BCS standings and these other polls remain the same through next weekend, and I expect they will, Bama will be in the BCS NC game.

LSU is the unanimous No. 1 for a third consecutive week and Alabama received all the second-place votes for a second straight week.

The SEC West powers are on course for a rematch in the BCS championship game on Jan. 9 in New Orleans.

Alabama (11-1) finished its regular season with a 42-14 victory against Auburn on Saturday, a day after LSU (12-0) beat Arkansas 41-17 to clinch a spot in the Southeastern Conference title game against No. 12 Georgia.

At this point, even with a loss to the Bulldogs in Atlanta, LSU might move on to the national championship game.
