NCAA president Mark Emmert leads summit on campus safety - ESPN

Ok, you tell me what's wrong with this picture. Now, I'm not saying it's not a noble idea to be concerned about campus safety, but is that really the main purpose of the NCAA? Shouldn't campus safety be left to the individual schools and campus police at those institutions? Doesn't the NCAA president have more important things to tend to at the moment? When is this guy going to wake up and start addressing things that matter to the NCAA?

Now, I can see if maybe he's concerned about campus safety related to athletes terrorizing the public like the *U four did when they committed armed robbery, but they were off campus..

Well, he's been so very effective at managing the NCAA's existing responsibilies and at managing their image, so he's a natural to lead a summit on, well, anything.

Let me preface this by saying that I think Emmert has done a horrible job in his brief tenure as NCAA President, and let me also say that as an organization, I have as much disdain for the NCAA as I do for Auburn.

Having said that, I have absolutely no problem with this. Emmert, as a former college President, is seeking to help educate university personnel and promote safety, particularly as it relates to athletes.

If he were advocating the NCAA enforcing a new set of security rules, that would be one thing. But this is not much different than the President of a university group establishing a conference to look at improving the retention rates amongst students from poor backgrounds.

Am I misunderstanding what he's trying to do?

Never have seen much come out of any "summit" unless it was job justification. If this effort is to check on the background of propsective student athletes then it flies in the face of the Saban Rule which was instituted to keep HCs ( read Nick Saban) off high schools campuses which I as understand was used to check on the character and behavior of prospective signees. Never let be said that the NCAA was on not top of things. :rolleye2:
