I, like some on here, am trying to complete the sec stadium tour. I know it’s a few weeks away, but I like to get an idea of what I’m doing before hand. Tennessee is one that I’ve never been to. I’m planning to go this year and see us smoke them, but I just had a few questions...

1) I’ve always heard neyland isn’t average to above average butt friendly. Is that true, and if so are there better spots in the stadium to sit than others.

2) does Tennessee have scalpers? I want to get as cheap as I can for decent seats and wanted to know if scalpers are an option in Knoxville.

3) is the vol navy really what it’s hyped up to be or should I skip it

4) what pregame and tailgate traditions are a must see there

5) how is parking

6) where to eat up there.

bonus: what is your best memory up there

Thanks in advance

All I can add is that watching the band march to the stadium and then performing in front of the stadium is fun to watch . . . if you like bands.

Best memory - my dad's final Alabama game was 45-10 win in Knoxville in 2013.

Worst memory - watching Alabama lose after being up double digits in 1984.

1. I've always been treated great at Neyland. Been to more games there than any other SEC foe. Stadium reminds me of a Legion Field in its hay-day. Be prepared to sit close to your seat mate because they get 100K+ in there because they crowd 'em in.

2. I always had tickets in hand when I went there.

3. Vol Navy is cool to watch and then the band coming into the stadium up the street and I'm not a band person either. Their Power T before the Vols come out it pretty cool. Get ready for lots of Rocky Top...but probably not near as much if Tenn. had a chance to win this game.

4.Haven't done much tailgaiting there, but they seem to be spread out more around campus than how centralized things are around the Quad in T-town.

5. I parked in a deck east of the stadium...it was free too (this was about 3 years ago) last time I visited there.

6. Calhoun's is a good place to eat around Knoxville.

Best memory is from a day during Peyton's days at UT. We lost but I went with a great friend who was a UT fan. He took me to a Tenn./Bama game. He was a good man. Loudest stadium I've ever been in when they were beating Bama.

Last time I was there with my wife, we dominated them from start to finish.

Don't smile! If they see a full set of teeth, that will immediately identify you as a visiting rival...

Been making that trip every other year since 1984. It's a good trip and I like the atmosphere of Neyland and the Smokies and downtown Knoxville ain't bad if you're not a Gatlinburg guy (I'm not). Hotel rooms in and around knoxville can get expensive, especially if you dare to stay downtown, but that's no different than most SEC towns for big games.

1. Neyland is good atmosphere/environment, but a somewhat crappy stadium in terms of moving around and comfort and viewing the game, though recent upgrades helped a little (we've always dubbed Neyland the world's larges double-wide).
2. Plenty of scalpers at Neyland, and if you wait until 30 minutes or less before kickoff you should score tickets for well below face value, I would not sweat tickets at all given UT's season.
3. To me vol navy is something that's kinda cool to see once, but not that big of a deal. It's not really an experience unless you know someone with a boat, so just go down to river front night before or on the way to stadium Saturday morning and see it, take a few pics, and move on.
4. Tailgating is not as big as walking the strip, though national chains have taken away a lot of the charm & atmosphere of the strip. We used to tailgate on campus with UT friends we have in Knoxville, but university has taken over much of the on-campus spaces so parking can be a challenge. Some people park in garages and then walk the strip.
5. See above, parking is kind of wherever you can find it, a little like Athens but worse. Maybe a little like old Legion Field, just get there early and find a spot.
6. Calhoun's on the river is pretty much the famous go to place. It's ribs and bbq. We typically go there Friday night because my brother likes the tradition (and he usually picks up the tab). To me it's good, but a bit overrated. Still it's a neat location on the river and on Friday night there will be a lot of Bama & UT fans down there. There is pretty a nice riverfront walkway for a nice troll with wife and/or kids. For late night after-game pizza we like DaVinci's. You'll need advice from someone else for any high-end restaurants as Calhoun's is about as uppity as we get in Knoxville.

Lot's of memories for me. But the 1990 game stands out as one of the most exciting finishes I've ever seen, and one of the loudest games I've ever been at. UT kicked 4th qtr FG to tie it 6-6, then with about a minute left tried a long FG to take the lead but it was blocked and luckily for Bama rolled a long way. Bama got ball and kicked game winner with just a few seconds left. UT fans were shell-shocked and Bama section went nuts. That was back when most of the away fans still sat in a block in the corner, so we were able to make a ton of noise.

It's a fun trip, especially of late. Bring cigars ahead of time, because last time we were there the cigar shop in downtown Knoxville (which was pretty good) had closed.

The tickets are most expensive at a distance from the stadium. As you get closer to the stadium, the price drops.

1) I've found the spacing for the upper deck seats to be narrow length- and width-wise. I'm not a very big person, but I do have long legs, and I was still having to sit in an awkward position to fit in my assigned seat. Once the UT fans left after Alabama started blowing them out, I had more room to spread out.

2) I've always had my tickets in hand, so I'm not familiar with their process.

3) It's cool to see because it's different, but I find the experience to be a bit overrated like tailgating at The Grove.

4) No clue. I've just simply gone there to find something to eat, get to the stadium, and get in my seat. In the stadium, their pre-game routine is a big letdown compared to Alabama's home pregame routine. I even feel like no one else bothers to show up until literally right at kickoff.

5) UT is an urban campus, so you're better off scoping out the random places around campus and Knoxville around campus for parking. It's reasonable, but I don't recall a central place for parking for games.

6) There was a gyro place called Niro's Gyros close to campus that's really good. There's also a good pizza place nearby as well, it's called Stefanos Pizza. I will say that the police seem to shut down Cumberland Avenue at a certain point during the evening on game days.

Everytime I've watched Alabama play at Neyland, they've won big.

Its been a few years since I've been, but here are some things you might be interested in (that I didnt see mentioned above):
One of my favorite traditions occurs right before the game starts. The UT band plays the opposing team's fight song. Im not sure what time they typically arrive, but the Bama buses show up on the river side of the stadium, right underneath it. There is usually a good collection of Bama fans there to cheer them on as they get off the buses, and if you ask around someone there probably has a rough idea of when they may arrive. The Million Dollar Band marched up Phillip Fulmer Way (south side of stadium, near the river), playing the fight song. We were tailgating with UT fans along their path, and the UT fans applauded them.

I have been to many games at UT as a Bama fan, and have never had any real problems.

In all seriousness, it's been a few years since I've been and I've only been twice but here's what I found...

Once I had tickets in the Alabama section and the other time I purchased tickets outside the stadium. I was able to get better seats for face value about an hour prior to kickoff when buying outside the stadium rather than sitting in the visitors' section.

You will learn how a packed sardine feels.

Tennessee fans - at least a fair number of them - seem to take their weekly bath/shower on Sunday.

If you are afraid of heights, try your darndest to sit in the lower bowl. The upper bowl is so steep it feels like if you were to stumble heading down the aisle to get some refreshments you would likely end up in the lower bowl.

My son and I made the road trip to Neyland about six years ago and we have crossed off Auburn, Athens and Knoxville on our attempt at doing the same thing. So far, Tennessee ranks #1 of those visits and probably because of their band. We found the fans to be nice. I went to their game day site and found free parking in the downtown car lots. Not to bad of a walk to the stadium just uphill both ways. Third Saturday in October is nice in Tennessee, you'll enjoy the trip.

The last time I visited Neyland was Fall of 1998.

1. The fans were obnoxious. We were in the middle of the dreaded losing streak and fans had no problem reminding us of that.
2. The seats were too narrow. I felt like I was crammed into sardine can. I agree with UAME, buy 4 tickets to ensure you are somewhat comfortable.

There was something suspicious with their "stadium expansion" a few years ago. The only people involved was a crew with a bucket of paint and a tape measure. You can do the math on that one.

Been to each stadium in the league and Neyland was the one I said I'd never go back to.

Got smashed up into a throng of people trying to all get into the same stadium gate and that was miserable, but the tiny seats were the worst. Total dump.
