New coach search...

If Miller only makes 800k/yr, then why did we let the whole Marshall thing drag out this long? He's not even making 7 figures yet, so it would be hard to turn down say, 2.3 million. I'm sure there were signs that Marshall wasn't coming. Nobody is that good of a liar (if he indeed played us). At the first sign of trouble, BB should have gotten on the phone with Miller. I know it isn't a sure thing, but it would be even harder for him to turn us down than it would've been for Marshall, especially for a guy who doesn't even make a million

Of course I am not sure of all the details or what happened along the lines but apparently they truly were really convinced that he was coming. Just gauging at what I have seen and heard. In hindsight, there were cracks and probably signs but I think they held to Miller being plan B. I don't know exactly what was discussed through back channels with the Miller camp but I really think Battle and others in Bama's camp thought they had Marshall. Who knows how close if it all that ever came to being reality. I guess now though it is what it is.

Define turning around. Im only worried that he will be more successful than us for the majority of the next 5 years. My main concern for our next coach is to be ahead of the mid tier teams in the SEC to include LSU and Auburn. The NCAA tournament can wait, im more focused on being better than the boogs an the corndogs for the time being.

FWIW I really dont think Pearl is going to win the SEC, let alone own it like the boogs seem to think.

Ok, that was my definition, making them a legit threat in the SEC. I don't doubt that we are in danger of falling behind them over the next few years.

Then you what is your personal opinion on CNS. He did the same thing so many times.

Saban at the time had no intentions of listening to anything until his season was over when he was asked that question. Saban never told us he was coming before he made his decision. It is clear to me Marshall did. Look at the timing, just as Texas reported they had a deal wrapped up with Smart he signs a new contract for significantly less than our offer with Wichita. We thought there was a deal in place and he essentially reneged. Even Finebaum says we got played. AD's generally don't get dirty and travel to a city to discuss terms. They go there to pick their new coach. He never got on a plane and if he was serious about our offer that is one thing he would have done for sure if he was concerned about moving his family. The moving his family thing was a smokescreen so he could gauge Utw interest. He was hoping the Smart/ UT negotiations would fall through.

First to say I've been annoyed with some of CNS and Jimmy Sexton's antics. However, I don't recall having an AD from another school flying into Tuscaloosa and meeting with CNS for 8 hours like Battle did Monday. There's also talk that Battle flew to Wichita last week, too.

Thats more Battle's fault than anyone else's. He probably shouldve sent ambassadors (which he might of) to get a very good indication. I think we handled it poorly and marshall handeled it masterfully. He used a desperate Bill Battle to get what he wanted. Good Buisness is done without emotion.

You see it as being handled masterfully. I see it as a guy that needed attention and played a school for a $2 million raise.

I hope this isn't true at all...

Here is what should be done:
1A. Offer Smart 3.75 million a year and obviously pay his little buyout.
1B. Offer Miller 3 million a year.
Nothing else will do unless they can nab a big name that hasn't been circulated yet.

Im talking about Saban to Texas 2013 not "Im not coming to Alabama 2007". Before you say those were just rumors, consider that he got a big raise based on constant rumors throughout the year about him leaving. To top it off, out of the blue his wife coincidentely is looking for a house in Austin the same year. Saban did the exact thing that Marshall did to us with two exceptions: 1. Patterson never flew to Tuscaloosa and 2. Patterson never made any official details publicly. Bill Battle made this thing a heck of alot worse than it should of by flying to Wichita without a clue on Marshall's intent and coming public with the whole ordeal.

I agree. We handled this very poorly. He should have been given till Monday and that was it. Instead here we are 4 days later looking like buffoons. He had all weekend last week to come and visit Tuscaloosa if he really wanted the job. What wife says to her husband I am not going to check out a potential new city we may be working in soon?

That talk originated from a Texas radio show. The only time that might have been true was Nicholas and his wife moving to Texas for work.

He got everything he wanted (happy wife, big raise, and perception as a good coach is intact) so how do you think he handeled it?

I'm not in the "Battle messed up" camp, but I will be if he didn't offer significantly more than the $3.3M-3.6M range noted above.

Don't think he handled it well.

Seems to me he could have easily gone to this AD when Bama contacted his agent and said "Hey, a particular school in the Southeast just contacted my agent. You know the wife and kids love it here. I do, too. Don't want to leave. Since I took us to the Final Four, had an undefeated regular season last year and went to the Sweet Sixteen this year, think you can up my salary some?"

Maybe so, but it sure did help get him a raise.

Didn't like when Saban did it, either.

Someone convince me on Miller. I see an average resume but with an Elite 8 run. He seems like a less experienced Jim Larranaga.

Big difference. We know he has zero buyout and can leave whenever he feels the need to move on. He never said he was going to leave or stay either way. If he was considering it, I would have no problem with his wife looking for a new home. He never lied to anyone about it. Saban didn't lie about flirting with Texas and frankly it was a very real possibility. Marshall essentially lied about his interest in our job. Do you really think we'd be sitting here with no backup plan if we thought there wasn't an agreement between Marshall and Alabama? Battle didn't get to be where he is because he is in the business world without being very smart. From all reports were that Marshall wanted the job, but his wife didn't want to move. Think about it, what wife would refuse to at least check out a school who is offering her husband a 2 million dollar raise? It doesn't make sense.

Agreed. Not sure if he could've handled it much worse IMO. If we indeed got played, then I'm kind of glad we didn't get him. He went through an awful lot of trouble to extort more money out of a school that can barely afford his current contract. It gives me the impression that he thinks he is bigger than the university, and that's not what we want IMO

.
Maybe ethically he didnt, but then again there might have been some intrests by Marshall and some stubborness by the Shockers on the number he wanted. I think its like Shark Tank. You shoot high, haggle, weigh your options, and make the best possible decision for you. I get the disappointment but I dont get us getting overally mad at Marshall for seeing an oppurtunity and taking it. IMO
