If Marshall is off the table, my top five would be...
1. Shaka Smart - He is the only other "available" coach who is in the top 5 in wins in the NCAA over the last 5 years. I don't care that he coaches at VCU, he has proven over a long period that he knows what he is doing.
2. Tom Crean - I think that if IU doesn't want him anymore, and we do, that a mutual agreement could be worked out to work around the buyout. I think Crean has done a pretty good job at IU, seeing as he was recovering from the Ralph Sampson era. I think his style of offense/defense would be wonderful at UA.
3. Bobby Hurley - I think he is one of the smartest young coaches in the game, and will eventually be one of the best coaches in the nation. He is one of the Coach K disciples most suited to be a program builder (along with WoJo).
4. Steve Lavin - Talk about premature firing, Lavin was coaching at a once prestigious basketball school (St. Johns) with a dwindling recruiting ground (NYC) and still was competitive every year. In 12 full years as a head coach (he took one year of recovering from cancer), he was 9 NCAA tourney trips and 2 NIT trips...with only 1 losing season. I think he ends up out west (ASU perhaps), but he would be a good hire.
5. Any number of mid major coaches - From Michael White at La Tech, to Ben Jacobson at UNI, and a myriad of others...there are a ton of mid-major coaches we could toss money at. The problem is, none of them are as proven as Marshall, or have the pedigree of Hurley, or the experience of some of the others perhaps. We might hit a homerun, or we might end up in the same position.
I could make the list longer, but I left off guys who I figure aren't moving this offseason (Prohm and Miller), who are WAY too long shots (Brad Stevens isn't leaving the NBA, and Mike Anderson has his job at Arkansas), or guys who are proven coaches but I would rather not see them at UA (Barnes...no thanks).

I also like Tom Crean.....but I think he was recovering from the Kelvin Sampson era. If he had had Ralph Sampson I suspect he would be pretty popular in Indiana right now.![]()
If the Koch brothers were going to shell out large sums of money for the sole purpose of keeping Marshall at WSU they would have already done so. Marshall has been offered more money several times by other schools and turned them down. Anyone in their right mind would know that the offers will keep coming in and will increase over time. If they wanted to lock him down by offering huge sums of money they would already have done so, IMHO. Typically (not always, but typically) donors such as the Koch brothers do not donate their money to people but for buildings that will bear their name. Plus, the Koch brothers cannot touch the SEC Network. I don't think (myself included, until recently) have understood the impact that the SEC Network will have on member schools to be able to recruit as well as provide additional funds. I think the SEC is about to become a very competitive basketball conference.
Sometimes I think there are a few universally accepted truisms in the world -- things everyone would understand and agree to. And then I come here and see people suggesting Pastner...
Archie Miller is an excellent choice and I hear that his family doesn't like Dayton!

Fortunately for us, Marshalls opinion is all that matters. Not sure if this has already been discussed, but umm...in terms of them being able to match the money..
Yeah
about
that
But in any event, call me a skeptic...but I just don't see Marshall coming here. The national perception of us is a lot different than our perception of ourselves. I think he stays put.

I have heard from a reliable source that the BOT is meeting as I type this and was told they rarely meet on weekends.

Somehow I knew this was coming.

I think half the people in Memphis would gladly help him pack. Maybe more than half.
