I agree. But, you will need the type of players who can handle that style of coaching. I'm sure he can eventually build the program with that sort of player. The problem is our players have been through that, with CAG. We all saw how much better they played, when CAG cut them loose. I fear a lot of the players we now have would tune him out very quickly.

Here's some info on Avery's coaching style.

The system I wanted to implement sprang from my overall philosophy of being the aggressor, not a reactor, on the basketball court.

After a missed shot by the opponents, with the ball in our possession, we want to go. Of course, the first and most important part of starting an offense is not to let the opponents grab the offensive rebound. This means every player must do whatever needs to be done to keep his man off the defensive board. The blocking-out technique can vary from coach to coach, but the must for each defender is to prevent his man from grabbing the offensive rebound.

He will certainly impress the parents, with his no-nonsense approach.

Plus, he would not shy away from doing the "Hey, Coach!" show. That would be a definite improvement.

Is there any example of a pro coach with zero college experience as a head coach or as an assistant coach coming to the college ranks and having success?

Fred hoiberg from Iowa state......he never coached in the NBA....but was an NBA player and never coached college bball before Iowa state

I don't know but if you gave Grant John Wall, Demarcus Cousins, Eric Bledsoe, and Patrick Patterson, he would probably do okay. I have a hard time seeing Prohm convincing that kind of player to come to Bama. AJ might not either, but I could see him doing it.

IIRC, Hoiberg was a NBA executive. He's rumored to be a candidate for any possible openings, too.

I floated Johnson as an unrealistic candidate a while back. Shows how quickly things change. If he can adapt to college, this could end up a homerun hire. I've always liked CAJ, but heard the same horror stories that others did about how his professional career ended (coaching wise). Maybe college will suit him better, much like CNS.

Out of all the names I've seen connected to our hiring search..Avery Johnson gets me the most excited, just cause recruiting wise, it would be huge sell being able to tell recruits, I've coached at the highest level of Basketball in the NBA..I know how & what it will take to get you to that level..I think Coach Johnson would tear it up recruiting & that's what Bama needs right now to begin to fix our B'Ball Program..He obviously knows how to coach, but, his name & NBA coaching resume, would help bring in Top Recruits from the get-go..I hope Bill Battles can talk Coach Johnson into coming to Bama & become our Coach..

NBA a lot different. There if a player doesn't like you he can get you fired or sabatoge your team
