New OC Jim McElwain's offense should be a draw for JJ!

I feel that the hire of Jim McElwain has to be a big plus for JJ. His hybrid type offense with many formations is designed to get the ball in the hands of the big play makers. I think this hire drastically improves our chances with JJ and will give JJ reassurance in the future of Alabama's offense.

I also think that Burton Scott could have a now potentially increased role in this offense. He may very likely play defense, but I think in CJM's offense Scott could even be a larger impact player than expected. CJM's offense also plays in the favor of Star Jackson's athleticism which is nice to know. I am very excited about this hire and I feel it will help us get out last remaining recruits and help hang on to the ones we already have. RTR!:BigA:

Re: McElwain's offense should be a draw for JJ!

What type offense does CJM run?
This was taken from the football board, and was a synopsis given by a Fresno St. fan of CJM's offense:

McElwain's offense is not quite a spread, not quite pro-style. The best thing about his strategy is the versatility. He constantly has guys shifting and going in motion, and he puts in a lot of unique formations.

Likes to use TE's and H-backs - we've run a power offense using a fullback for as long as I can remember (Lorenzo Neal is a Bulldog, and comes back in the offseason to train our guys), but as soon as Mac showed up we pretty much phased it out.

Mac LOVES dual threat QB's. Our guy is not quite mobile enough to have run what Mac really wanted him to, so we saw a lot of no QB sets, or the QB would motion out wide and direct snap to an RB... we really never knew what was coming. The guy is brilliant, motivated, and a GREAT developer of talent at QB.

Once our offense got rolling and became cohesive later in the year there wasn't a D we faced that wasn't on its heels. Including K-State and G-Tech. He loves to mix it up and run a trick play or two each game.

For any that may have seen the G-Tech game, we lined up 3 lineman and the QB on a 2-point conversion, with additional linemen, TE's, RBs and WR's out wide. The defense didn't know what to do, not to mention who was eligible and who wasn't. Its his own style of offense. Its entertaining, refreshing,...and great to not have to play against.

Re: It's official: Jim McElwain hired as new Bama OC and QB coach

I read on another board from someone with connections to Fresno that Coach Mac is supposed to be in South Alabama (can you say 'Foley') later today for a meeting with a popular recruit there.

I'm sure Coach Mac will be shacking up in T-town for several days while his family prepares for the move.

Re: Jim McElwain OC 2007 interview

Sounds good to me! Interesting that he is a friend of Cowherd. I'm not expecting any love from The Herd, however.

Im really excited about this hire, and think we got the man for the job.

His credentials should be huge for recruiting aswell. He's got pro experience as a QBs coach. Successful as a QBs coach on the collegiate level on various stops, experienced, and known to be a players coach, and had a big turnaround with Fresno's QB in a season. But his experience as a WRs coach is very very positive aswell and should help sway Julio to show that his new OC knows how to coach and utilize WRs. In 2000 his first year @ Louisville he had 2 top 30 receivers in receptions a game and 2 overall in yards a game in the top 100, and Zek Parker wasn't far behind. The next year one of those receivers were gone (Arnold Jackson and Deion Branch returned) and Parker entered the top 100 list along with Branch. Then they were all gone the next year and Dorsey had a good season.

I think we're going to be able to get the ball in the hands of playmakers on the perimeter and he still loves to positively utilize his RBs. And I think he'll find a way to have JJ and Burton and Ray absolutely star on the field together, yet have a running game to rely on. I can't wait. Hell, this move may fill the stadium up again @ the A day game.
