I like NFL OT myself. I would like it if the rule was both teams had to take possession of the ball at least once.

What I like about it is that you are not taking away aspects of football. In college OT you don't have to kickoff. You won't punt and play field position. You only have to move the ball 25 yards for a TD. You can kick a FG too easily. It's still football. I think they should have to play every aspect of the game.

I prefer the college OT myself. However, I do wish they would back up the start a little, so they at least have to work a little bit to get a FG. If the first offense turns the ball over, the other team can basically kick the FG on first down. I'd prefer they start at the 40 or 50, but at least back it up to the 35.

Having voted for a tie, I'll add:

I think college OT is generally silly, in that it is an effort to give detailed clarity to something that largely lacks overall clarity regardless (a national ranking/champion). I actually think that having records with ties would give a better picture of a team at the end of the season than a record with multiple OT wins.

I also don't like the way that OT essentially encourages a team to play for the tie near the end of the game. I'd just as soon, if not rather, see the risk/reward decision making made at the end of regulation. With OT, there is some skewing toward playing for the the other team to make a mistake, rather than playing aggressively. My classic example of a game that was better because there was no OT would probably be the Nebraska-Miami Orange Bowl in 1984.

If you're not good enough to beat them in 60 minutes on that day, maybe you don't deserve a W.

That said, I would conceed OT for championship games.

Where is the option for something else?

I like that both teams in college get a chance to have the ball, but I don't think that they should get the ball in field goal range. Either move it back to the the 35-40 in college or make the scoring team kick off in the pros if they score on the first possession.

I also voted college OT, but I'd like to see the starting point moved back outside of automatic FG range.

I voted for college OT, but I agree with some of your thoughts here. I'd add to move them back to the 50 and if they can't get a first down that they have to punt the ball and it has to been successfully received and could be returned. However, if the receiving team doesn't advance the ball to at least the 50 yard line, then that is where they begin their possession. At least this would bring a little more special teams play into O.T. At least starting at the 50 would require the O to gain at least 20 yards to get into reasonable fg range.

I do like the suggested change for the pro OT and I could see how that could be argued to be more fair to the team not winning the toss (compared to the current system). I'd have to see this played out a few times before I would say I like it better than the current college OT system.

Agreed. I think midfield is perfect b/c it's not too far to essentially have OT last several possessions, but not too close to lead to almost automatic points.

I like the NFL O/T rule the way it is now. I hope they don't change it.
Agreed. Alot of people say the current NFL OT rules is "not fair" and I'm thinking, "it's not supposed to be fair." If you want to win the game do one of two things: 1: win the game outright in regular time or 2: stop the team that won the coin toss from scoring. Duh.

So I prefer the current NFL OT rules, Not the potential sissifying new NFL OT rules in which the scoring team has to kick off.

College OT rules are too different than the standard rules - they take away the strength of a team built around defense. NFL OT rules used to be great until they moved the LOS for kickoffs.

So my vote would be neither (could never vote for a tie).

I like the changes proposed for the NFL OT. If adopted, I will look forward to seeing how it plays out on the field. Fewer teams would just play for a FG on that first possession.

I really don't care either way. If you want to win, score more points. If you don't want to lose, don't let the other team score more points.

Regardless of the format, at the end of the day, you only have yourself to blame for the result.

I would like to see a full 15 minute quarter, none of this nonesense like we have now. Let them go at it for 15 minutes and if there still is a tie, then another 15 minutes until we have a winner. Look at how much time is wasted when there is a 3 to 6 OT games.

Whatever happens, the game needs to end quickly. Go look at the records of teams the week after they play in OT games. It aint pretty.

A 15 minute quarter sounds good, but thats a lot of extra time to get injured, and it really wears teams out heading into the next game.

I think you have to just play football. You are starting a new half, if you will. When you start a new half you kick off and play. Just insure that both teams get a possession, whether it's after a score by the other team or it's via a punt or turnover. This would actually be shorter in most cases than the way it is done now.

The whole punting scenario you speak of would have way too many loopholes to actually implement.

For instance, Team X gets the ball at the 50. Has 3 plays and gains 3 yards. Now is faced with a 4th and 7. They could just simply go for it, or shank a punt out of bounds.

It would be way to hard to "make a team punt"...

I voted for college OT, but I'd take NFL OT if each team had at least one possession as you indicated. After one possession by each team and assuming the score is still tied, the first team to score would then win.
