I was in the doctor's office today and I was reading a magazine called "sports news". There was a story there about the heisman award and Pat Sullivan was asked why Alabama hadn't produced a heisman winner until Mark Ingram won it. His reply was that Alabama had produced so many outstanding players that it was difficult for one to stand way out in front of the others. I thought that was a generous and classy statement coming from a one time Auburn player.

I remember reading that article not long after Mark won the Heisman Trophy. Pat Sullivan seems like a really classy guy. I'm sure he was proud to see another player from the state win the award.

Along the class act lines, I see so much tearing down of rival team's players and teams on the web, so it's great to see someone supporting a rival's teams player and complimenting them when they don't have to.

I have always said that Bo Jackson was the most talented of the "2 sport" athletes. Way better than M.J.

I met Pat once. It was at that little hot dog joint in downtown B'ham, Pete's is the name of it I believe. I was with one of Pat's boyhood friends that I played softball with in Orlando. He only stayed in Orlando for one year and then moved back to B'ham.. I was on my way to Charlotte to play in the National Industrial Tournament and took a detour to B'ham to see Ben. Pat really impressed me, all class. Ben said that his whole family was like that too.

Funny story about Ben. He was a fine athlete and played baseball at Bama under Coach Joe Sewell, who is in the baseball Hall of Fame. But he still had the football itch and walked on as a TE. One day practice went a little long and Ben had a date that he was late for. After a quick shower he was hauling butt out of there and hit the door running, only problem was that as he banged it open, Coach Bryant was on the other side of it and he damn near knocked him down with the door. He said he nearly died when he saw what he'd done. He said that as soon as Coach Bryant regained his balance, he looked at him and said, "In a hurry Burton?" Ben said that shocked him since he'd only been there less than a week and was just a lowly walk-on deep down the depth chart yet Coach Bryant knew his name. Ben explained that he was late for a date and Coach Bryant just said, "Well, she must really be special so don't let me hold you up any longer."

Deion Sanders wasn't too shabby. If I had to choose between "Prime Time" and Bo Jackson, I'd go with Sanders as the better two-sport athlete.

And, FWIW, the UA-AU rivalry is a lot more fierce and meaningful to fans as opposed to the players who actually play the game.

Judging from the Facebook statuses and comments I read from Auburn players, I tend to disagree as they're no different than your average Aubarn fan. Every other football related comment is a an anti-Alabama rant (shocker right -- and this isn't just on one player's page, it's several also including the incoming players). I guess the fans rub off on them... and I wouldn't be shocked at all if the coaches don't have the same views as their fans and players do.

Not me, Bo was a much better baseball player.
