NIL Incentive

I was asking myself this question this morning, how feasible would it be to offer incentives in a player's NIL package. Set up their NIL package as the universities set up coaches' contracts with incentives as you reach the playoffs and up to the national championship game. You give players a smaller base package, but they could make more money if they make the playoffs and win a national championship. Also, why can't universities lock these players into contracts for four years if it could be legal and would this prevent players moving around every year?

Here’s the rub: there’s no guidelines. Player can just say no and go take a package without incentives.

There’s no reason for players, or their representatives, to want this dynamic to change. There’s players hold all the power, with the exception of the few thousand who will be left without scholarships or teams soon.

Nobody cares about them, folks just want their “bag.”

Thanks for your response, because I don't know the ins and outs of NIL. This is the craziest set up, because it is a complete win for the players and the university sports programs are screwed. No business would go into any business deals like this, and college sports is a business now. The NCAA or someone needs to regulate or set some kind of guidelines, because every year a program should just try and pick players from the portal every year to fill out their rosters. Being an NFL coach or GM would be an easier job.

As it’s written, the government stepped in and put a “salary cap” on university spending, but the collectives can go beyond that, with the agreements supposedly being vetted against abuse by an outside oversight committee. Outrageous compensation wasn’t going to be approved, but no packages have been denied to my knowledge.

The player’s side is essentially undefeated in legal challenges in this area, so I imagine it would be useless to try to stop them now.

I have a co-worker whose son plays(played) for an SEC team. He actually just entered the portal last week. I talked to him about it a couple of days ago and found out some stuff that I didn't know regarding the NIL stuff. Apparently, just because you agree to a certain $ amount, doesnt't mean you will necessarily get that $ amount. His stuff was in payments, not a lump sum. The dad said they would look for any reason not not give the kids the agreed upon amounts. Not enough playing time, not enough production, we heard you were out doing something you shouldn't have been, etc, so we aren't going to give you what you are due. I don't know if this is lack of funds due to the schools overpromising, or what, but I assume this isn't an isolated incident to this one player or school.

If you can't say "where" I understand, but is this a Tier 1 SEC, football school???

FWIW, this is the way it should be. Only pay if the performance is worthy...thus name, imagine, likeness is becoming known for their production!!!

Historically, definitely not.

I agree, but that is not what is going to get these kids to sign. They want to hear "You are getting X amount of money". I'd venture to say a lot of schools are overpromising on these deals, and then figuring out a way to only pay what they have available. Manipulating playing time, stats, etc. That could be another reason why we are seeing so many kids hit the portal, that they just aren't getting what they were promised. Wouldn't shock me at all. Nothing pertaining to college football would shock me at this point. Like you I'm all for NIL the way it is supposed to be. If you are recognizable enough to use your name or image to do some commercials or sponsorships, go for it! But the pay for play we have now is unsustainable. Crazy how it has changed so fast. When I played college ball in the '90's, I had to get it okayed to be able to earn money in the Summer, so I wouldn't get in trouble for impermissible benefits. It's wild!!

This sounds absolutely plausible. It's the wild west in the sport right now. No one has any guarantees of anything.

Until legally binding contracts are the norm, the standard, we are at the mercy of the streets. It's just wide open. Meanwhile, sports gambling continues to build momentum. And data centers to handle it all kept being built. My goodness. How long until someone trips over a power cord and blows a circuit, derailing this entire mess?
