Observation about our S&C

One thing I've been paying particular attention to this spring, summer, and fall has been the reports on our team strength and conditioning. From the reports I have read, our guys are looking to have far better conditioning than in past years. While sheer strength will always be a factor in how effective a player can be, it looks like speed and stamina are a little bit more of a focus for our team.

Judging from the photos I've seen of our players practicing, one observation I have is that our team in general seems to be lean and slender (including our lineman, where I don't see a lot of "gut" hanging out as compared to some other teams). This seems to be by design of CMS, and I look forward to seeing how this shows on the playing field during games. On the lines, my hope is that the speed, skill, and conditioning of our players wins out over the sheer bulk and girth that other teams will bring to the table (as an example, the huge UT lines, or the O-line that Arkansas had last year where they had a couple players well into the upper 300's).

I think it will definately help. It doesn't all depend on how big and strong you are. For linemen in particular, even if you are outweighed by 50-60 pounds, beating a guy off of the ball and getting into his pads quicker gives you a much larger advantage than being huge. Now the potbellies can push and lean all they want, but when you have leverage you have just made your self many times stronger and taken their size and strength out of the equation.

I reserve judgement on our conditioning until I see how we fare in a game situation. It seems that every new season that rolls around, there's all sorts of talk about how 'this year' we're on a radically different, and naturally much better, s&c program. I just don't put much stock in reports that any new s&c program is automatically an improvement, even though every report every year seems to think so (but if that were the case, wouldn't our guys be bionic by now, if our system 4 years ago was this super awesome s&c program, but every year since it's allegedly been new & improved?).

Anyway, I'll wait and see how we fare.

Sunday B'Ham News

If you can get a copy of the Birmingham news form Sunday - there's a great article in there about S & C at Alabama (& others too) & the S&C coaches too. Pretty cool article.
