I think this is the root of the problem, and I've thought so for years now.
We can talk about details, schemes, strategy, etc. But I think the root cause of all of this is entitlement.
We DO have more talent than almost any other program in the country. To be fair, certain spots are young (secondary).
Vanderbilt is the least talented program in the SEC and almost always is. I dare say they will not finish with a winning record this year, even after what they did to us, but certainly won't be better than 7-6 after a possible bowl game. They lost to Georgia State! But what they do have is a hard nosed attitude, hard working, take nothing for granted, and will fight you for 60 minutes.
Alabama does not have this. And we have not had this on a consistent basis since 2020. Oh, if the opponent is right, or if an opponent mouth's off in the week leading up to a game, oh sure we will play with our hair on fire. Otherwise, we are sloppy, lazy, and entitled. I don't know how you fix that in today's environment.
Don't know if most have seen this. They sent Bray Hubbard in to replace Moore after the hissy fit. Moore waved Hubbard off and refused to come off even though Wommack and Deboer were telling him to get off. This is a captain. Not good at all.
I'm glad you posted this because I've meant to bring up the 3rd down and 4th down conversions.
Forgive me if others have already brought this up and I've missed it but I was hoping that UGA converting so many 4th downs the previous game was an anomaly.
UGA was 3 for 15 on 3rd Downs and 5 for 5 on 4th downs (7 for 7 if you count penalties)
Vandy was 12 for 18 on 3rd Down and 1 for 1 on 4th down (I know they had at least one more on that stupid duplicate # penalty.
So basically the last two games we have allowed 15 for 33 3rd down conversions and 6 for 6 4th down conversions (8 for 8 counting penalties though their might have been a few more vs Vandy I can't recall exactly)
That's at least 21-23 times the Defense COULD NOT get the opposing Offense off the field.
What makes it even worse is that most of those situations were 3rd and long or 4th and Medium.
It's a problem... BIG problem.
I read someone on here said that they heard Vandy was running a wasted dummy play on 1st down just to see what we were doing to set up getting a 3rd down conversion.
I don't know if that's true but if it is that is just embarrassing.
Vandy.... VANDERBILT had us so scouted that they could afford to just waste a down and make adjustments off it to pick up conversions.
That is pathetic and very concerning.
Yes, two-time captain. Last year and this year. He's a 5th year guy and supposed to be a leader. If that's one of your senior leaders, what does that say about the culture? I will say I saw he issued an apology this morning that sounded pretty contrite, so hopefully he will make amends in the right way with everyone involved and with the team. He's a captain? He's got that C patch on his shoulder? That would be stripped off and he would have to earn it back.
I really disdain insubordination. I'm not even that old, either. Then again, there is always more to the story.
Unfortunately we got our answer today - the portal. I wonder what happened there - he was on the Outland watch list and played early on. I would've thought he could've helped stuff the option RB dives last Saturday. Obviously something behind the scenes......I have wondered where Oatis is because I never hear his name called. I have no idea if he is injuried, in the dog house, or what the situation is because he looked like he could develop into an outstanding Dlineman his freshman year. From my perspective our Dline is not very good. I think there is some talent there but no one is elite or at least no one plays at an elite level. I don't know if we have a bunch of recruiting misevaluations or if it's a development issue or a combination of the two. The key to having an elite defense is having an elite Dline.
You can expect Vanderbilt to get curb stomped by Kentucky Saturday night in Lexington.
There were some real life run plays that counted as pass plays- they had 3 or 4 inside shuffle passes that combined for probably 100yds at least. And they picked up enough yards to get the 1st every single time. It's simple. I've highlighted the 3 main reasons why we lost the game. The 3rd down efficiency of Vanderbilt kind of relates to time of possession. I was kind of surprised at Vandy's yard per rush number. I only saw highlights of the game and looking at the complaints on the board made it seem like they were running through us like a hot knife through butter. I guess they got the yards right when they needed them though.

Some are saying we should expect other teams to implement aspects of Vandy's veer/option offense.
The next game I coach will be my first, but I don't think that'll be as easy as some suggest. Teams like Vandy and Service Academy teams run this is because it's unusual, puts better athletes of opposing teams in situations of uncertainty, and, bottom line, just makes preparing for that one game very, very difficult.
So, just throwing in little option play here or there is possible, but the way these offenses work is they wear on you play after play after play until it pops. Most conventional offenses would probably make more mistakes trying to do this than it would be worth trying. JMO.
Please tell me about these adjustments that you saw.
