Bama Game Thread: Official PostGame Thread - Bama vs. UGA...

Here’s a point I wish to me, and please understand this is in no way a criticism of either you or your viewpoint:

Ask yourself honestly, what do you think the reaction would’ve been if we had hired Cignetti to replace Nick Saban in January 20 24?

Something tells me a number of people on this board, and I’m in no way referencing you, would lose their collective minds that we hired the head coach of James Madison to drive the slick and sleek car, and a number of those same people would’ve pointed to that guy who had just played for a national championship, following an unbeatable season until the final game at Washington.

I understand hindsight is 20-20, and picking a football coaches a lot like choosing a spouse or a vice presidential, running, mate, or for that matter like a box of chocolates in that you never know what you’re gonna get.

But let’s add that the obvious only becomes obvious after the obvious has happened.

Nick Saban could just easily have flamed out at Alabama as become the living legend. His hiring was based largely on the fact he was able to win a national championship at LSU after they had been in a decade long funk.

Most of our hires not named Mike DuBose made sense under the circumstances in which they were made, whether the coach turned out to be successful or not. Even Shula - in the context of the time he was hired - was still the path of least resistance and problems later.

Oh yeah for sure this is my hindsight 20/20 view.

No way we could have hired Cignetti without major drama and backlash.

I’m just impressed with what he’s done so quickly at IU of all places.

We are Bama fans and that gets the majority of our focus but the ND vs Miami debate is just as controversial.

Head to head has to trump everything when the resumes are virtually identical. It shouldn’t even be a debate, Miami should already be ranked ahead of ND, but they have been the media darling for 100 years. If ND is in and Miami is out then they are saying that the on the field results do not matter when you have touchdown Jesus in your corner. I hate ND and their preferential treatment.

So, would anyone feel more comfortable if Bama punted down on the 12 yard line , held Georgia, drove down to the 17 on the next drive and kicked a FG to make the game 21-10? I mean, DeBoer could have done that and not received the national media backlash of ‘don’t belong in the playoffs ’ instead of trying to win the game.
One thing, if CKD didn’t know the monster that is Alabama Football, I am sure he is well aware after this year.
I would have felt more comfortable being able to run the ball instead of four straight passes.
I didn't mind the going for it but EVERYBODY knew we were going to pass. Because we simply can't run the ball.

Cignetti has worked a miracle thanks to the portal and installing a culture of hard work in a matter of months.

Helps that they played lots of air... But they got the right pieces in, are flexible, and have made it work.

But still... 3-9 the year before going 11-2, with only three winning seasons in the previous twenty years (and the winning seasons were 6-2, 8-5, and 7-6!).... Impressive to be 13-0 and top ranked this year.

and their 1st ever #1 ranking ever in 130 years.

I'm not certain if DeBoer has the right mentality to win championships in the SEC. It takes a really cutthroat person who will replace anyone at any level who he thinks isn't doing the job, right down to the guy who does the laundry. BUT..... I believe the real sign of decline is in the run game. I tried to do a comparison but quite frankly the Saban years were mostly ridiculous by today's standards even for the best teams. We were utterly dominant. It was however hard to ignore when I compared the top 3 running backs combined yardage for seasons there was a precipitous decline that started BEFORE DeBoer got here. Even so this season was an absolute collapse in the run game and I don't think you're going to fix it with the current group of coaches. I think some changes need to be made. Does DeBoer care more about winning or does he care more about his staff. This is what killed Shula's tenure.

I respectfully disagree. I've been watching Bama football since dinosaurs walked the Earth. This does not look like a team headed in the right direction. Specifically, two seasons now with QB/offense regression. This scheme is not working because of the O-line IMO. With the talent we have, the right coaches could do a lot better than this. We need a complete reboot.
You've done nothing but stir the pot since you arrived just a few days ago.

Life-long fan, huh???

I really hope the coaching staff is looking at a version of this trend line and discussing how to correct. Teams don't have to rush for 1,800 yards to win big, but you can't only rush 861 and win the games that matter. This is the lesson west coast football never really learned. Those teams would win 9 - 10 games a season, but never the ones that counted. Unfortunately, that feels more like DeBoer's vibe. Hope it changes.

Cig, has one year of success. I think IU was crazy for paying him what they did in that raise.

They could just as well sink the middle of the B!G next year.

I just don't buy them suddenly being a top level B1G member, but time will tell.

FWIW, I like our draw in the bracket. If we beat OU we get IU.

If I remember correctly, when Cignetti came to Indiana he brought half the team from James Madison with him. That's definitely paying off this year, but I guess we'll have to wait and see how he does long-term with recruiting etc.

Will be interesting when his Assts start getting hired away for HC jobs

But it’s also wild that he’s not doing this with a bunch of 4-5 stars

It’s legit development and coaching them up
