Ain't really playing much but sitting out now when I do pick up something is:

Ovation Elite - blueburst finish - shallow bowl electric accoustic

Rickenbacker 360 6/12 = mapleglow finish (christmas 2004 present from wife)

Fender Jap Strat - tri color sunburst, tortoise pickguard, black hardware, Bill Lawrence single coils at middle and neck, Bill Lawrence humbucker at bridge. Floyd Rose tailpiece.

Hand built (by me) Clone of Fender Vibro Champ in white tolex with 10" Kendrick Black frame speaker (real vibro champs have 8" jensen) Mullard 6v6 power tube, Mullard 5Y3 tube rectifier, RCA 12AX7A preamp and vibro tubes. Has Kendrick transformer and puts out a decent 12 watts. The control panel is mother of pearl pickguard material, I bought a sheet from Wormoth, knobs are red chicken head Fender. Front speaker board is covered in black snakeskin and has black Marshall speaker cloth. Black leather handle and nail on Fender feet. This is the most gorgeous amp I have ever built and it sounds pretty good too.

I have some nice stuff collected and whether I play them or not I don't want to part with any more. I have sold half my collection over the last couple of years and added just one.

I have 3 other amps in storage, Vox AC30, Fender Delux Reverb blackface, A hand built (by me) 18 watt Marshall head in red tolex with 2 speaker cabinets in red tolex and wheat grills, one has 2 X 12" Kendrick blackframes the other has a 15" Webber ceramic speaker. I may sell all but the Vox.

Effects on the floor are a dunlop cry baby wah, chandler tube chorus, Boss DD6 digital delay, Boss CS3 Sustain / compresser, Boss reverb, Boss power supply

Other guitars, packed away:
Fender Delux Power Telecaster - see through white finish, tortoise binding and pickguard, rosewood neck, fender lace pickups & 7 way switch. Has strat cutaway back. My favorite guitar.
Gibson ES335 - cherry finish 1964 model
Gibson Les Paul - gold top 1958 reissue with humbuckers
Larrivee L19 LVE - was at the right place at the right time, bought from a bluegrass player in a bind for money.
Martin D18 - bought new in 1976
Fender Precision Bass - bought new in 1964, Olympic white, black guard, rosewood neck. Do not own a bass amp.

Set of Pearl congas 3 drum set in Purple Orchid fiberglass, matching bongos, Pearl djembe in wood finish, 3 Sabian cymbals, percussion rack of bells and blocks, etc. Some things you shake and hit.

Yamaha grand piano.

My gear:

1 mexican strat (midnight wine/ maple neck)

1 yamaha pacifica (black/ rosewood)

1 alvarez acoustic w/case

1 taylor big baby w/taylor gig bag

1 fender hot rod deluxe

1 fender frontman 15r (that needs a little work)

1 marshall jackhammer pedal

Wish list - 1 mark knopfler strat, 1 nice hollowbody electric (preferably gibson, gretsch, or ibanez). I also could use a wah and some other effects.

I will probably invest in some effects first. Then probably another strat.

bayou,

do you ever get the ES335 out and play it?
Haven't in a while. The only one I change out on the stand very often is the Strat with the Tele. If I could only have one guitar it would be my telecaster but it's not all that much like a standard tele. I never cared that much for strats till I found this japcaster on ebay a few years ago. I had a Roland Synth on the Strat for a while but decided I would never use all that stuff and sold it. The Goldtop hasn't seen daylight in probably 4-5 years. I actually hate Les Pauls because they are so heavy but this one is so drop dead good looking. Occasionally I will get my D-18 out and put the Ovation up for a while. I have to leave the Rick out for a while to make the wife happy since I whined and cried for one for so long. ;)

You ever own an SG, Bayou?

As far as gear, a few changes -

Put Van Zandt pickups in my Mex Strat.
Got a Hot Rod Deluxe.
Still have the Crate 15 watt.
Got a Tube Screamer.

Nope, have never owned a SG, have owned a Les Paul Studio Lite that was stolen. I did like the Studio, it was wine red with gold hardware. I never did like the looks of a SG.

How you like that tube screamer? Is it a 12AX7A or 12AU7A that it's overdriving?

Time takes a toll

About all I have left is a '72 Telecaster (black w/ maple neck) bought around 1984. It's completely worn out and in need of major restoration. Also have a '90 American Standard Strat (Red w/ maple neck) bought new in 1990. The only amp I have left is an old Crate bought sometime in the mid-80's. Also have an Alvarez acoustic I bought sometime around 1992 or 1993.

I have a whole bunch of dead DOD pedals and a working rack-effect unit, although I can't find it right now. Mostly I just bang around on my Yamaha Motif keyboard. I guess I need to pick up the Strat and see if I can do anything with it.

Many guitars, amps, effects, and wireless units have bit the dust over the years. I mostly miss an old amp I had. It was made by "Coustic", had 6 10" speakers, and would run you out of a lot of rooms. It was highly modified and eventually smoked itself one night when I was cranking a Les Paul (not mine) through it.

Seeing this post makes me want to play again...

BamaSC, you need to dust off those Fenders, restring them and give them some exercise. The '72 reissue can probably be salvaged by taking it to a music store that does repair work and having a set up done on it. Are the frets worn out? A fret job isn't that expensive. Add a set of strings and the cost would probably be under $100. Don't worry about dings and paint chips. Too bad it isn't a real '72 you would be sitting on a small gold mine. "72 Tele's are going for around 2K in the right places. That's a fairly popular modle. I had a '72 reissue once, Dakota red, I sold it about 6-7 years ago for I think $750. Keith Richards plays a real '72 custom. A lot of "72's have a humbucker routed out under the pickguard and a single coil mounted as a Tele Std or Delux.

The Strat is up and running

Hey Bayou,

I always kept strings on the Strat, but am not so good keeping the dust off! Actually played it some last night and again tonight. Pleasantly surprised myself. It is kind of like riding a bike.

The Tele is a real '72, built in March of '72 according to the stamp on the neck (where it mounts to the body). I bought it used in '84. Yeah, the frets are completely gone, the pickups are shot, tuning keys are shot, pots and switch are shot, wiring is shot. She's completely wore out! The neck is beautiful. I've worn the finish off in about a dozen or so places. There's a guy in Columbia who is really good with them so I guess I should go ahead and get her going again. That is my favorite guitar and the one I learned to play on. I bought the Strat because I was wearing out the Tele. But I never really played the Strat until the frets gave up on the Tele, so the Strat is still in mint condition.

I can't imagine having an AC30 in storage! I've played through those a couple of times and just fell in love with them. I wonder if I could buy one and sneak it in the house without the wife noticing? I'm pretty sure she does that with shoes.

Definately have the Tele refretted and get someone to take care of the electronics. Don't worry so much about the cosmetics. When I saw '72 Tele bought in '84 I assumed it was the re-issue modle, my bad. The guitar is definately worth more than what you paid for it.

Guitars are never shot, they just need some new love :D.

Rich, its an AX. I just got it a week ago, and haven't used it much yet. Honestly, these pickups drive the heck out of it when I crank the volume. The TS is nice at about 1.5 (out of 10). Anything more, and we're talking Ritchie Blackmore tone.

OK... this is going to be sort of confusing to type AND to read, but here goes....

Guild Starfire 4 or a roundneck Regal Dobro

into a WOBO ABY switch (this guy has his own shop on EBAY. check him out for utility kinds of pedals. he's out of Poland so be ready for some S&H charges.)

CHANNEL A (clean) MXR 10 band EQ ---> Boss RV-5 Reverb ----> DOD passive mixer ---> preamp

CHANNEL B (distortion) John Landgraff Dynamic Overdrive ---> Boss EQ-7
----> Boss RV-5 reverb ---> DOD passive mixer ---> preamp

PREAMP - HHb Fat Man stereo tube compressor/preamp... this is one of the best buys i have ever made.

POWER AMP - ~1974 AMPEG V-4 Head... i'm just using the power unit in it as the EQ and preamp in the old girl is a bit too touchy. the power amp in this thing is ridiculous. i think if you turned it up past 7 it would literally explode.

CABINET - Shawnee Custom 1X12 cabinet w/ Celestion G12 Century speaker... this guy is out of Illinois. he makes good stuff and will build a cabinet any way you want one - from the wood trim to the color of the brackets and vinyl. give him a try if you're looking for a new cabinet and you don't want to go mass produced.

ROCK ON, KIDS!!! :)

Love the Guild Starfire. The Ampeg V4 head is interesting. Has it been modified any? Ampeg amps are hard as heck to work on. I have tinkered around in a couple. Do you still use 7027 tubes or have you gone to 6L6GC? I may still have some NOS RCA or Sylvania 7027A somewhere. You could also use 7581, 6L6WGB, 5881 or some real cool British KT66 coke bottle tubes. Your V4 amp does not use the 2 extra pins the 7027 has, the only V amp I know of that uses any of the extra pins is the B18 Portaflex. You can also modify the amp to use EL34s but when you do, don't use any other tube except maybe a 6550 and you will need to add a bias control. To change to EL34s simply install a jumper between pins 1 & 8 and change the screen resistor from 470 ohms to 1000 ohms. I have a lot of old carbon fiber resistors if you want to try this. Also run this past another amp guy to make sure I'm not full of crap.

yeah, i had it modified a couple of years ago due to the price of 7027A's (45+ a piece) and their sound was not the greatest. a guy that does work for Ken Stanton Music in Marietta, GA did a great job converting it over to use 6550's. it is easier to push the power tubes with the preamp stage now and breaks up a little better when you overdrive them. he set the bias and all too and this baby sings!!! it really is the best sounding and most powerful tube amp i've ever used. i'm sure there are better, but not for the price i paid for this combo amp in college. my bass playing friend in college had this amp in his closet... he had bought it off an older lady whose husband was in prison. he obviously wasn't going to be needing the amp for a while so she made some cool cash and everyone was happy. woop woop! :)

if you have 7027's, you must have had one of these heads at one time or the combo (VT-22 i think.... which is what this head was in until i removed it and made a little cabinet for it). what happened to yours? i don't know of any other amps that use those tubes.

I have owned both Ampeg B-15 and B-18 Portaflex Bass amps. Wish I had kept the B-15. Both those amps used 7025A tubes. I sold both to finance other purchases. The only other amp I can think of that may have used 7025s is Bogen.

I am a huge tube freak, you could almost call me a tube collector. I would like to someday make a display case with rows of ceramic tube sockets to display some of the more rare tubes I have. Most of my stereo equipment is tube, even the CD player. All my guitar amps are tubes. If you ever need some off the wall tube let me know. If I don't have one, bet I can find one. Same for vintage carbon fiber resistors, capacitors, vintage wire and transformers. I have designed and built point to point hand wired circuit boards for cloned amps. The amp I am using now is a highly modified Fender Vibro Champ. Hand built circuit board, vintage wire, silver solder, ceramic tube sockets, Kendrick Transformer, Mullard power and rectifier tube, RCA preamp tubes, presence control added, cabinet slightly oversized to accomodate Kendrick 10" 16ohm blackframe speaker. This one is covered in Red Tolex with black front & black Marshall grill cloth. The control panel is white pearl pickguard material cut from a sheet I bought from Warmouth. The chassis is from an old Fender Champ bought off ebay that I stripped, cleaned and polished.
