Am I the only one that thinks Cyrus will come in and compete for immediate playing time at LT with Douglas being in the doghouse? I think Cyrus may already be better than Love and others. JMHO.
As soon as Cyrus steps on campus..He very well could be the best OLineman on the team..Dude is that good..

My understanding was that Arie could have have made the 2 deep this fall but they decided not to burn a year and redshirt him. Cyrus might be good but my money would be on him RS as a freshman. But if we have to start a true freshman we might be in trouble. There are not to many A Smiths out there.

Agreed. Cyrus may be good enough to play next year, but if he's not the starter, then he'll RS... which I fully expect him to do. What many are forgetting is that these kids are still 18. No matter how good or how big they CURRENTLY are, they almost always redshirt a year to add a bit more weight/muscle and get a little better. Back in my Bama days, I had alot of classes/parties w/ Evan Mathus (sp?) and the way that guy looked in his freshman year compared to years after was incredible. That dude was crazy though.

If you saw him compete in the lineman challenge at the UA game its easy to think he could play right away. He was faster and more agile than 245 lb d lineman and won the competition easily. He looked like a rabbit during parts of the course and used his brain as well to find the hidden football (he was watching to see where they placed it which none of the other guys did). If he does redshirt I feel sorry for the defensive starters that will have to face him on a daily basis.

He's just as big a recruit to me that clowney is.

Have to respectfully disagree here. No way an 18-year-old can displace two third-year sophomores (Fluker and Warmack), a fourth year junior (Jones), and a 5th year senior (Vlachos). He may or may not have the most talent. But even if he does, that doesn't translate into immediate on-the-field performance, especially in the OL.

Assuming he signs with us (assumed by many, but not a done deal until signing day), I really don't think he'll play unless it's as a starter. Doesn't make sense to burn a redshirt for garbage time against a non-conference opponent, and limited duty at best for the SEC.

So hopefully, he redshirts. Because if he starts, that means either (1) we haven't been able to develop a LT, and a guy at his senior prom in April is our best option at LT against Penn State five months later, (2) somebody else who isn't a natural LT slides into that slot, and Cyrus plays where that guy vacated, or (3) there's been some injuries.

None of those three are good options.

The Chris Samuels and Andre Smiths don't come around very often, but Cyrus has that chance, but I'll wait until fall camp to make that judgment.

Agree on Andre Smith. Most talent ever at the LT position. Wasted it with a bunch of bad off-the-field decisions and lack of work ethic once out from under Saban / Cochran's thumb. He did in the pros what Linnie Patrick did in college.

Samuels wasn't all that incredibly highly recruited as a senior in HS. If I remember correctly, his senior year was marred by injury, either before the season or during it. I think he was pretty much a consensus 3-star on signing day, and that was based mainly on junior and sophomore performance. Certainly nothing to be ashamed of, but nowhere near in the league of Smith's hype.

He might turn out like Andre Smith, but after watching Clowney run by him, he might need one year of coaching to get some experience and get his technique refined.

I watched some of the drills and the guys announcing said that the drills that they run favor the defensive players.

I think CK is amazing but most of the scouts have mentioned that he needs work on defending the pass rush. High School didn't give him too much challenge considering most the DEs he went against were 5 inches shorter and 100lbs lighter than him. It will be different in the SEC and he would benefit to a RS then a statement like best OL we have is very valid. I still defend the depth statement though. Considering we have many people talking about multiple guys going to multiple spots it seems that we've got some talent on the OL that could go on different sides on the line. I don't think we can move guys to different sides and expect too much so I don't see Fluker even getting the opportunity at LT b/c he improved at the RT and having another year at that spot would only make him better. Arie should be a backup but things could change depending on the spring and fall workouts. That's not a bad thing though b/c he's only a RS freshmen and will have plenty of time to have success in Bama. I think CK goes the same route but gets the LT nod

Well that's not really accurate. They had some battles, both getting the better of the other on occasion and that was of course in practice because they were on the same team.

And BTW I fully expect CK to redshirt and we should all hope that is the case. Andre was good but the reason he started as a freshman was because of the lack of talent on the roster at the time. A problem we do not currently have.

Andre didn't dominate all the competition in all-star games either. He had his own trouble at the U.S. Army game in 2006.

Andre Smith would not have likely started as a freshman had he came in now with the talent we have on the team. But at the time he arrived he was a shoo in to start because of the lack of talent we had. How has he done in the pro's? Don't keep up with the pro's much except for the playoffs.

so when and where could arie come in and play next season or is he not ready? if he wont play think he opens his mouth to his brother telling him not to come to t town?

I don't get the talk of Cyrus coming in and playing right off the bat. Too many other guys on the roster. I could see the possibility if he had been an EE.

UA would make the decision to not have Arie at a starting spot in August/September. NSD is Feb 2. He could open his mouth to his brother to not come but he'll already be in school for a few weeks so that would be tough. I don't think Arie would be disappointed at a backup spot his RS freshmen year. There is still huge chance of playing time

Agreed, the odds are pretty good that Cyrus would redshirt if he signs with Bama.
