I don't get the talk of Cyrus coming in and playing right off the bat. Too many other guys on the roster. I could see the possibility if he had been an EE.

The talk is because there's an open slot at LT, and open competition for it. His talent is amazing, but few freshmen OTs are ready to play LT in the SEC from day one. We'll see how spring and fall camp goes.

One of the major keys to the overall success of the '11 season is the play of the BACKUP LT. Competition for the backup OL slots will be the "meat" of this off-season.

If CK doesn't RS then I see him starting LT game one against Kent State due to Douglas' DUI but depending on how he does in real game situations will determine if he keeps the starting position when Douglas comes back due to his experience in the SEC

That's weird. It states he will commit but states he is considering Alabama and then later states "if" he commits to USC then yadda, yadda. To start the article with "will commit" it makes no fact statements or sources and then throws in all these "if's" and "would's". I'm gonna hope this one isn't true.

Regarding CK coming in and starting immediately, I'd like to take your minds back a couple of years ago when D.J. Fluker was in a similar position. Even though he was new to the position of OT (granted, CK has better technique at this stage), DJF tore up the all-star games and was THE talk of the Army AA week. Coming in, a LOT of posters on this very site were totally convinced he would take the LT position from Carpenter... and at the worst, unseat Drew Davis at RT or win the RG spot over the other competition.

Coming in, he worked hard and was physically adequate to play SEC ball. Yet, he didn't even come close to unseating either Carpenter (JUCO with one spring under his belt) or Davis (2nd year starter considered "the weak link of our OL)... and Barrett Jones came away with the RG spot. Regarding Andre Smith, had we had any depth and development along our OL during that time period (remember Connely?), he would not have started his frosh campaign unless injuries hit.

I'm not saying CK isn't capable... but it's got to be the the perfect circumstances with preparation and having a spot open that can be filled. Granted, we're not full with great OT's... but some of our guys on campus will have a lot to say about a true frosh coming and in and taking the spot they've worked hard to earn, and you can't overlook the amount of work guys like Love, Boswell, and McCullough may put in... realizing their time at the Capston is quickly coming to an end. NO ONE thought Drew Davis would end up at RT for us in 08... and no one really thought Barrett Jones would win the RG position in 09. Both did it because of hard work in the offseason.

I haven't heard CNS comment (and I don't know if he even can) about the AD DUI. Has CNS said AD will miss any playing time next fall? Whether he should/shouldn't is up for debate, but I imagine that would have little to do with if CK plays or is redshirted.

I know AD committed before the DUI, but I don't think CNS would have offered a JUCO player a scholly if he didn't think he was going to come in a start and make a significant impact like Carpenter did two years ago or like Mt. Cody did three years ago.

CNS can comment on a recruit only after he's signed his LOI. Saban has already stated the situation would be addressed when Douglas arrived on campus. He said the situation would be handeled within.

For those who haven't read this amateurishly written, wishful based fanshot, here's the nickel tour:

Per BR
"If Kouandjio chooses USC, he would be a key cog in an impressive offense that is only getting better by adding the 2011 recruiting class"

Bleacher Report deserves a wet blanket ban.

Kiffin's selling out USC's future for his benefit. When Alabama got hammered they went ahead and took scholarship reductions immediately even though they were appealing the final numbers. USC is going to take a full class this year and push off the first year reductions to next year. If CK signs with them the real pain will start about the middle of his career and get much worse as he approaches his final season. It will get much MUCH worse after that. But you can bet the house that Kiffin doesn't plan to be there by then. Five years from now USC will be coached by some schmuck who can look good on TV while losing.

I'm thinking CK took the trip to USC for a free paid vacation to sunny California. Why not? I would. I'm sure Kiffin plans on hypnotizing him or whatever, but hopefully CK is too smart for that.

Have to respectfully disagree here. No way an 18-year-old can displace two third-year sophomores (Fluker and Warmack), a fourth year junior (Jones), and a 5th year senior (Vlachos). He may or may not have the most talent. But even if he does, that doesn't translate into immediate on-the-field performance, especially in the OL.

Assuming he signs with us (assumed by many, but not a done deal until signing day), I really don't think he'll play unless it's as a starter. Doesn't make sense to burn a redshirt for garbage time against a non-conference opponent, and limited duty at best for the SEC.

So hopefully, he redshirts. Because if he starts, that means either (1) we haven't been able to develop a LT, and a guy at his senior prom in April is our best option at LT against Penn State five months later, (2) somebody else who isn't a natural LT slides into that slot, and Cyrus plays where that guy vacated, or (3) there's been some injuries.
I think Cyrus could be the most talented OT we'll have as soon as soon as he walks on campus..But beating out a returning OLineman with plenty of experience..Is asking a lot..Unless he's Andra Smith good(which I don't think he is) & barring injuries..Cyrus will RS..

I still can't see how USC will be allowed to sign more than 15 players this year when the NCAA penalty called for a reduction in scholarships to begin the 2011-12 academic year. (assuming the penalties are upheld on appeal)

The way I understand it is they can sign as many players as they want as long as they use the reductions in the time frame given by the NCAA. More knowledgable folks, am I correct?

I'm only assuming that Douglas will be suspended for the first game, nothing that CNS has say would convince me that way but what I meant by that is I think that's the only way he gets the starting spot over Douglas
