I think weighting of recent results and the organizational stability is responsible for that.
He specifically cited superior resource pool also.
He isn't "inventing" reasons, he is applying the criteria he laid out, only one of which is in Alabama's favor.

Given we're in year 2 of DeBoer and Texas is on the upswing now with Sark going into his 5th year....yeah, I can see giving them the nod over Bama. They've got consecutive playoff appearances, almost won the SEC in year 1....their recruiting is at the top...their resources are virtually unlimited.

We'll see how we do this year. We've got Grubb and a real QB now.

But he also said Bama has had the better program over a rolling 4 year period. He contradicted himself. Bama has won the SEC twice in that time and been to the playoffs twice, once to the national championship game. Bama is 1-1 against Texas in that time. I agree that it’s close, but based on his own criteria, Bama should get the nod. He then justified it by saying “Saban isn’t there anymore” as if Bama has been terrible without Saban at the helm.

FWIW, I'm ok with Pates #3 ranking when you consider his criteria. UTA has a baked in advatange with their $$$ advantage, which is part of his criteria.
