Per BOL: Lance Thompson on the Way Back to Alabama

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

How many of you were in favor of Houston Nutt when Jess brought him up? The majority of replies in that thread were a major no. Would you have complained if CNS hired Nutt as OC? Or would that be "CNS hires him, and I'll support them" type comment?

I actually liked the idea of that, when it was brought up.

^^THIS^^ Really guys, it's about coaches changing jobs, that's all. All this resentment I'm reading is silly. He took another job for more money and now he's coming back to the same company. Get over it. He was doing a fine job for us before he left and I'm sure he'll do a fine job when he returns, in whatever capacity...

I think when we see this discussion as purely "resentment", then there's a lot to the story that people either don't know or have chosen to conveniently forget. I'm in the camp with Earle on this one... this hire makes me nervous, not from a viewpoint of a potential infraction waiting to happen, but primarily from the ability to coach and the ability to put his off-the-field issues behind him. Would love to be proven wrong with this post... and time will prove whether the concerns were legitimate or not.

While I have reservations about CHN, I'd support his hire.

The reality is CNS has forgotten more about hiring good coaches than any of us will ever learn. You can argue reasons as to why any particular hire is a 'bad idea in your book', but much like any other discussion we have, we're acting on incomplete data or with far less experience than CNS.

So yah, while on the surface I have reservations about CLT, if CNS wants him, I welcome him back. Unless one has more experience or details than CNS, then I'd suggest 'your' opinion is worth about what I'm willing to pay for it...

I guess if you don't say "this is the best damn hire imaginable. He's the best coach out there" you're deemed to be questioning Saban's coaching decisions. It's quite possible to trust in CNS but not need a change of pants when a coach is hired. I have no problem with him coming back because he's one hell of a recruiter and he gets his share of coffee, but he ain't perfect by any stretch. He left on a bad note with many fans and it seems reasonable that many folks are not to be thrilled with this guy.

Most every schools fanbase judges the decisions made by their head coach. Well maybe not every fanebase there's still The Kentucky Wildcats.

EDIT: And the Indiana Hoosiers

I'm not for censoring anyone's opinion--but....

All I would say again is trust Coach Saban. He has ALL the facts of the case involving LT and you, I, and every other person on this board does not. ;)

Time may ultimately tell that this was the wrong decision, but with two NC's in 3 yrs, I'm willing to defer to Coach Saban on this one. RTR

I remember back in 07 that people trusted Major Applewhite's hire... and Kevin Steele that same year. Both turned out to be poor "fits" at the Capstone, as were a few more in subsequent years. Winning a couple of championships doesn't automatically mean that we can't have some whifs in our coaching hires. Call it lack of trust or whatever else you'd like, but I'm not going to rubber stamp this hire. At the same time, I would like nothing more than to be proven wrong for having concerns... as I mentioned earlier, time will tell.

Exactly. He was a great recruiter at all his stops. That is a positive. Some felt when he left that he was a deficient position coach though or at least he was a better recruiter than coach.

Might as well close down shop and be done with it, then.

Obviously, some on here are very concerned by the rehire, and they probaby have good reasons for feeling that way. I respect that. But again Coach Saban knows more than any of us have ever forgotten about what happened in the past involving assistant coaches that have worked here before. I for one feel comfortable that if LT comes in here and does not fulfill his job responsibilities that Nick will fire him without hesitation, so I'm not all that worried about it.

LT is an average position coach and a great recruiter. With the LB talent we have, not sure we need a great teacher. As long as he keeps his pants on this time and his recruiting is above board, I have no issue with him coming back.

If he is more concerned with playing around I am sure Saban will quickly run him off.

I'm personally fine with LT coming back. I don't like the way he left Tuscaloosa the first time around, but I think he is a pretty good coach. We could definitely do much worse IMO.

Doesn't Kirby coach backers now?

I believe so. In any event, what Thompson may lack in the coaching department he counter-balances with his recruiting ability IMO. I can't say I'm particularly thrilled to see him back after the way he left, but I certainly trust CNS so.......

Well, I guess in a way it's not such a bad thing that some are not happy about LT coming back. We now have someone to blame if our LBs don't play well next season...:)
