Per BOL: Lance Thompson on the Way Back to Alabama

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

My memory isn't what it used to be but I recall most of the smack talk being done by Kiffin not Thompson.

"Not 24 hours after Volunteers coach Lance Thompson declared that UT had placed a wall around the city of Memphis to prevent any of the talent it produces from escaping the state, receiver Keiwone Malone did just that, agreeing to sign with Alabama in 2010."

I believe we are still allowed to dislike coaches saban likes/hires. It's a free world and a free msgboard. As long as you don't curse or act like an idiot

Coach Saban will do what he thinks is best, and he should, of course. And, I've got to say it will chap my hide to see LT in Crimson.

Football makes strange bedfellows.

Keep hearing he is not a good position coach but seems to me the LB'ers developed ok while he was here. Kinda hard for someone who does not have first hand knowledge of day-to-day operations to say how he is as a position coach. Coach Saban was his boss and I am sure if he were a poor coach there is no way Coach would rehire the man. In Coach Saban I trust. The end.

Welcome back to Bama Coach Thompson. I posted on TI three years ago several times defending CLT's move to UT because it was a personal decision he made for his family and career. He served admirably under CNS at LSU and Bama and was a super terrific recruiter. Some of the vicious attacks and smears on CLT because he moved to UT was pathetic.

I'm uncomfortable also, and not so much for doubting his LB coaching abilities, particularly when compared with Willis and Sunseri. I just know too much about what he did and knew during the Dubacle. I don't know how black Willis' record is with the domestic stuff, but I'd preferred him, both as a recruiter and position coach. I'll trust Saban's judgment until we see Lance's onfield performance, but CNS is not perfect and has made some bad hires and he'd be the first to tell you that. The main rationale, I hope, is that Lance is a super recruiter, when backed up with CNS as a closer, and we have CNS and the other LB coach to fill in any LT deficiencies in onfield coaching. Couldn't he just coach TEs? :)

Earle I can't say as I'm real happy with this either. He was involved in some things at TN I would rather not have a coach on our staff to have been involved with. I'm sure CNS did his homework, but nervous is putting it lightly as for how I feel about this hire.

On the surface... trading Sunseri for Thompson, I'd say Tennessee got the better end of the deal by far.

But I can only see the surface (I also realize it's not that Sunseri and Thompson are literally trading positions). So, I'll trust the guy that has led us to two NCs in 3 years.

He's an excellent recruiter. It's his job to have bravado and pump up his school. If Saban wants him, good enough for me.

I'd like to think our compliance department would keep close tabs on things, and yes, it was quite apparent that CLT had other reasons for taking Kiffy-kins offer. Glad it's all past now. Hope for the best.
