My give-a-damn was busted regarding Petrino leaving the Falcons and going to Arkansas. It would be the same toward any pro coach leaving for any college job. Professional sports simply suck--they ruin the value of competition and sportsmanship because they encourage an atmosphere where individuals focus on themselves rather than focusing on the team or winning.

I think he could win (or could have won) a championship if he were to coach at a championship school, but I don't think he can do it at Arkansas. More importantly, after watching the beating he's taken over bailing with just three weeks left in ATL, and after watching his press conference, I think he's doomed and will leave the Arkansas fan base united (but united in their anger over his supreme failure). Honestly, the situations are eerily similar with the one exception being that Petrino left the pros to go back to college (although I suppose the SEC was Fran's version of the pros).

1) A revered coach is let go after a not losing season

2) A hot commodity coach is hired as a replacement even after there are some underlying issues that show he may not be able to get the job done

3) The hot commodity coach mailed in final games, at the very least because there was no passion for the team they were currently coaching

4) The press conference. Seriously, watch it and think back to Fran's press conference. Listen to Petrino's voice...his nasal vocal tone along with his inflection which is misaligned with the actual words he's saying (I'm excited...national championship...yaaaay...) are almost identical to Fran's, especially the inflection part. It's like he doesn't believe what he's actually saying and he's not good enough to act his way out of it.

5) The cheer. I started having flashbacks to Fran's "glory days" when he participated in this with them--he looked like a marionette.

6) The way he left. There is a right way and a wrong way. Since he left the pros, I wouldn't have cared if he smeared feces on the players' car windows as he walked to his parking space. However, perception is crucial, and the way he left may have a critical impact on the remainder of his career.

So, two questions: Does anyone else think Petrino may have purchased Fran's snake-oil warehouse? Does anyone else get the impression that Petrino could be a colossal failure at Arkansas, collapsing Fran style?

Actually, Petrino = Lou Holtz. Holtz left the Giants after 13 games to take over Arkansas in the 70's.

While I a love seeing Fran have mediocre seasons and eventually lose his job, Petrino is even worse than Fran when it comes to moving around. He moved around a lot as an assistant (2 years or less in most places) and then obviously left Atlanta before the season ended.

I actually think Petrino will be successful @Arky, though no MNC to show for it but he will have success both in recruiting & coaching there. As far as leaving ATL (or NFL team for that matter) in a lurch, all I sense from any owner or any team is crocodile tears. The NFL (owners, teams, union, contracts) is rife with so much selfishness, greed, & corruption that most people could care less. I have been a Falcon fan all my life but this sorry excuse for a season has worn me out & shut my faith totally down. Blank was wrong to have fired Mora Jr in my opinion. Mora (though his dad did most of the telling) pointed out for anyone remotely interested in listening that Vick was a major-league COACH Killer. Turns out he was more interested in actual killing than the figurative kind. But ATL has several pro-level coach-killer types on their roster & again, I don't blame Petrino, Saban, Holtz, or ANY former NFL-HC for jumping ship & heading back to the 'minor league - NCAA'. There they will rediscover passion for the game & an opportunity to positively mold young men's lives for the better.

I've decided not to be judge and jury to coaches that change jobs. Coaches do this all the time, for a myriad of reasons, most of which have NOTHING to do with their character, how much they love the game, how much they love their team, and how much they love their players. Until I've walked a mile in the shoes of a College or Pro coach I can't sit in judgment of their actions.

I DO realize that their is a difference between HOW a coach leaves a team and WHY a coach leaves a team. In the long run it makes very little difference. If your coach leaves, you hire a new one and MOVE on.

Everyone is entitled to leave any job if they are unhappy and its being reported the Petrino family was very unhappy in Atlanta. We all know if mama ain't happy ain't nobody happy. I don't fault Petrino for leaving, but I think he should have at least finished the season. Most places I have been expect a 2 week notice. IMHO, finishing out the season is the equivalent of a
2 week notice.

Pretty much true. The Falcons tied their entire franchise to a dog killer, and traded away their backup for a career dud in Joey. They are a self inflicted loser of a wound. If they had fired the coach with three games left, I seriously doubt anyone would be flaming the Falcons for doing it. Happens to coaches and managers all the time. A coach or manager are only as good as the players he has around him. If the players suck, the team sucks and so does the coach. If the coach or manager has great players, then he is a great coach or manager because they are going to win. General Managers usually build the teams and the coach/manager runs the team. Team sucks, coach is fired. Look at the number of managers the Pittsburgh Pirates keep hiring and firing. But, they still do not win. Simply because the team does not spend money on big named players and fills out its roster with Class AAA players. Team loses, manager fired. The beat goes on.

Falcons / Petrino Call Truce

I, for one, can't blame Petrino on this one. The owner belongs in the Skybox not on the field. Part of the problem with Vick has been Blank treated him like a son - the fair haired prodigal son - and apparently chose to overlook or ignore his shortcomings. All of the Falcon players huddle around Blank because he's got the dough not necessarily because they like the man. Blank is a wonderful man but he's a retail guy not a football guy which has been all too obvious during his ownership of the Falcons.

I don't live in a bubble and all the negative sentiments expressed about Petrino are almost identical to what was said about Saban last year. These coaches are employees and if they're unhappy or get a better offer they're most likely gone. And like my dad told me once upon a time, "there is no nice way to divorce somebody". When you sever ties with someone or a school/organization there will almost always be animosity. If there isn't animosity, you probably weren't worth having anyway.

I think petrino is slime. what he did in Atlata confirms it. If he would have stayed 19 more days, he would have been viewed differently by many. I would agree about the owner and vicks problems, and everything,It is an impossible situation in Atlanta. By petrino's action, D'angelo Hall is now a good guy, a team leader.... what a joke. that being said, had petrino waited until season's end, he still would be crucified by the national media. AGAIN, the big mean, SEC is picking on the NFL. because the SEC has the prestige and power to pull coaches from the NFL, It scares the media powerbase in the Northeast, So they retaliate by slinging barbs and arrows toward the conference.

Hate is a stronger bond than love - and, many times, the emotions are so mixed that's it's hard to tell where one stops and the other starts...

Petrino is the ultimate coward. And I think he'll be in hell next year losing half his D and all of his offensive playmakers. I say he loses atleast 6 games next year, maybe more.

Saban just danced with the devil (the media) and got burned. Atleast he finished the season.
