OK all you NASCAR fans, I am hoping to surprise my husband for Father's Day by giving him one of those "king for a day" ultimate Richard Petty Driving Experiences. I know I can purchase the whole thing and give him a gift certificate which he can "cash in" whenever he likes within one year.

My question is which track to choose. I'm torn between Talladega and Daytona. Have any of you either done the Experience or know of someone who has at either of these locations? If so, what are your thoughts...pros and cons?

Any advice or stories to share are welcomed.
Thanks!

I have taken a couple of laps around Talladega in an IMSA car back in the 70s. If I remember right you have to go at least 90mph around the banks or your car slides down. We only did a top speed of about 145mph. It was a rush.

My wife gave me an anniversary present of the Dale Jarrett Racing Adventure several years ago. I drove at Talladega. If I understand correctly, the difference between Jarrett and Petty driving experiences are with Jarrett, the instructor rides in the car with you giving you instructions by hand signal. In Petty, you are alone in the car following the instructor in a lead car. I can give you feedback on the Jarrett experience.

One word: INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!

There are up to eight cars on the track at a time and if you catch someone, the instructors will let you pass. The instructors are connected via radios so the front car will stay high and the passing car will pass to the inside. I was able to pass three cars during my ten lap session including one on the bottom side of the banking going into turn one a half-lane up from the bottom. The other cars I passed going through the front-stretch tri-oval. I cannot adequately describe the adrenaline(sp?) rush. It literally took me hours to wind down. It is also set up for spectators. My wife and cousin went with me and both wound up going on a "ride-along" - three laps as a passenger with the instructor driving.

On the first lap, the instructor will gauge how well you are controlling the car based on your line through turns three and four. Smooth line and not fighting the car gets you a "thumbs-up" signal to speed up. The G-forces through the banking are awesome. A Talladega, if you are smooth, you can run flat-out for the entire lap. The top speed of the cars is 165. You can get DVD's from the in-car camera system so you will have something to remember it by.

To anyone who is a NASCAR fan or just is car-crazy, it is great. I am sure the Petty experience would be similar. Given the similarity of the tracks, I don't know how much difference there would be between Daytona and Talladega although there are a lot of other attractions at Daytona.

rt87 has hit the nail on the head. Lots of great info in his response.

I did the Petty "King Experience" five years ago at the Atlanta track. It was great.

I Did The Petty Driving Experience In Atlanta...

I did the Petty Experience this week in Atlanta. I had so much fun. I have to thank my wife for the early Anniversary present. Next to my kids, it was the most fun I have had in a long time.

I did a few hotlaps with the Petty "ride for families of freedom" where they were donating the fee to a college fund for the kids of 9-11 victims and it was pretty amazing.

I have also driven Road Atlanta in my own car with the Porsche Club of America and for my $$$ there is nothing better than a road course. Going a 100+ around Atlanta Motor Speedway with the Petty drivers was fun, no doubt and if he is a super NASCAR fan it may be the best for him. But you may want to check the Porsche Driving experience at Barber Motorsports park in Birmingham. Barber is by far the nicest road course in the US, which is why Porsche moved there from Road Atlanta. Instead of Winston cup type cars, he would get to drive Porsche 911's, Boxsters and even the Porsche Cayenne S on an adjacent off-road course. The instructors include Lemans winning legends like Hurley Haywood. It is a little pricey but I would imagine that the equivalent amount of track time with Petty would cost as much. Friends of mine who have done it rave about the quality of the instruction and the ammount of actual track time. Plus you get to turn right!

Staci, just my opinion on the differences between the NASCAR driving experiences and the Porsche Driving Experience. Jon is correct that Barber is an absolutely beautiful road-course race track. I live fairly close and have some friends in amateur racing so I have been to the track a number of times. The Porsche Driving Experience (I have investigated it some and would love to do it.) is a true high performance driving school. They train you in high-performance street automobiles the techniques of driving. It is a school.

The NASCAR driving experiences are more comparable to a fantasy baseball camp. The goal is to give us regular guys the experience of what it is like to drive in NASCAR (at least as close as they can come). Driving suits, sliding through the window, a NASCAR race vehicle - big V-8 thunder, brutally loud - like nothing you would ever drive on the street, checkered flag, photographs, etc.

I hope that helps with your decision. Good luck.
