Phil Robertson #10 (of Duck Dynasty) and Louisiana Tech played Bama and Kenny Stabler back in Sept 1966. The final was Bama 34, La Tech 0. Here's some footage from the Bryant Museum:

Thanks for sharing that video. I was at that game and remember very little about it except the score. I do remember the interception near the goal line on the North end zone because I was sitting there. What a great season and team in 1966!

La Tech was non-1A at the time and was a 13th hour replacement on the schedule for Tulane, which had left the SEC in July of 1966 and had requested to be removed from the Bama schedule. Although La Tech was the opening game it was not played until the second week of the season because of the scheduling difficulties. By then, Preseason #1, and two time NC, Bama had already been dropped to #3 in the polls and would be ranked no higher than #3 for the rest of the season. In fact, believe it or not, Bama was ranked fourth for four weeks of the 1966 season.

Looks like they were able to move the ball pretty well. Without the interceptions they might have put up some points.

I read an interview where Phil Robertson said one thing he could remember was when they hiked the ball it sounded like a clap of thunder.

Great post!
I just finished reading his book "Happy Happy Happy". I have a whole different perspective on the whole Robertson family. A great family with a great story! They deserve everything good that is coming to them! I have a good friend who was baptized by Phil in the Oauchita River and makes mention of it in his book. I encourage everyone to pick one up, sit back, and enjoy the read.
Phil Robertson for President!

They are from my hometown. Hunted with Phil a couple of times and played a few rounds of golf with Willie/Jase. Phil is a true inspiration, although he was pretty rough in his younger days. Poor too. When you are making ends meet by running nets and catching crawfish, you are borderline poverty. They do deserve all that they have received.

I tried to watch the show, but couldn't hang for more than about a minute. Apparently, I'm the only one in America who just doesn't find the show worth watcing. (note: I get that they have a strong faith base, as do I, & I also get that they're a solid family of good folks. I'm all for them doing their thing. But that doesn't mean I have to find DD amusing.)

Just curious, anybody know if Terry Bradshaw was on the field that night? He played for La Tech about the same time period and I even recall Phil saying at some point in his college career that he was Terry's backup qb.

Bradshaw was a year behind Phil. Phil quit the team the next year because it took away from his duck hunting. Can you imagine the message board fodder that would cause today if someone quit the team to hunt ducks?

Little more complicated than that. Pretty sure Phil was a Junior in that video and Bradshaw was a Freshman. He will actually talk about playing Bama from time to time. Technically, Bradshaw was Phil's backup but everybody knew that he would get the starting job the next year. Bradshaw had a cannon for an arm, he just didn't have a grasp on the offense yet. Also, Phil already was married and had his oldest kid, Alan, at the time. He is the non-bearded brother who isn't in Duck Dynasty yet. They were struggling to make ends meet and Phil needed to earn an income which is why he left the team. He actually completed his degree, did some coaching, earned money guiding duck hunts, and also completed his Masters. He even got a call several years later to play pro ball for the Redskins who at the time were breaking in a QB named Joe Theisman.

One great aspect of the show I like is the fact it is one of the very few left that does not embellish or include a character or characters of the "alternative lifestyle". You know; the gay and lesbian crowd.

Bradshaw was a Freshman and Robertson was a Sophomore in 1966. Robertson played one more year ahead of Bradshaw, setting a school record for passing yards in a game with 302 against SE Louisiana in 1967.

"Over three seasons, from 1965-67 -- his final two as starter -- Robertson was 179-for-411 passing for 2,237 yards and 12 TDs, but threw 34 interceptions for Tech (which was 8-20 in that span)."

Brunet: The last game of my senior year was Phil’s junior year. He and I and Bradshaw were standing on the field before our last game, and we used to call Terry “Bomber.” He (Robertson) looks at Terry, says ,“Bomber, I’m not coming back next year.” He said, “You’re not? What are you gonna do?” He said, “I’m going for the ducks, you can go for the bucks.”

Bob Brunet was the one that tried to get Robertson to try out with the Redskins.

Phil Robertson: When Brunet went with the Washington Redskins (a few seasons), he came down here. He said, “Robertson why don’t you come up here and just walk on?” I said, “Well what are they paying?” He said $60,000 a year if you make the team. That’s what the money was like. … Well, 60 grand didn’t seem like that much to give up duck hunting. He said, “Look, Sonny Jurgensen, you’re not gonna beat him out. But we got this hot dog you won’t have any problem with, you can beat him out hands down. I said what’s his name? He said Joe Theismann. … I said, “Brunet, let me ask you something: When all them ducks start heading south and I’m stuck up there in Washington somewhere, do you think I’ll stay?" And he kinda looked at the ground and he says, “Naaah.” I said, “No, I don’t want to fool with it.”
