Auburn can't even afford to fire Gus, because of the buyout, even today's announcement reducing the Buyout may still be out of their reach.
It's not just Gus. They would have to hire a new coach, and bring in new assistants too.

Alabama losing to the Barn last year, and their BOT going money crazy may just BANKRUPT them.
That is something to smile about.

I don’t understand. Why would Gus agree to a reduced safety net if he is let go? What is in it for him? It is highly unlikely that they could remove him this year both for financial and optics reasons. This isn’t Jimmy Sextons first rodeo either.

Just as well... I don't see much of a upside for Dabo becoming a Barner.
Going from the top team in NC to the 2nd or 3rd best team in Alabama is a pretty big stretch of the imagination.
Not to mention that Dabo knows what S.N.A.S.S. means. :)
Just like it has proved in Tennessee, that Pruitt did not chose wisely.

I'm puzzled, too. Only things I can think of to reconcile the loose ends are (1) there's qualifying language in Gus's contract that make the widely-quoted $32MM buyout not exactly right, or (2, and less likely) Gus has done something to create at least an argument for the barn to cut him loose for cause.

Otherwise, I'm also wondering what's in it for him to agree to this.
 
As I read the Barn fan's comments this will crush their recruiting this year. Gus and the staff will stay while fans want to get rid of the OC. boosters want to get rid of Gus. Perfect! I LOVE IT!!!

If I understand it right....Gus wants to fire assistants. But, it’ll cost money. They are saying there is no more money because its wrapped up in your buyout. Lower the buyout and you can get new coaches.

Seems like they are working together like famibly.

Some believe this "offer" was Auburn's first step in running Gus off. They never expected him to accept it.

It makes absolutely no sense unless there's something not being reported.

This whole thing just baffles my mind. I wonder if we will ever know what they have on Gus because, no way any sane person agrees to less money just one year after inking a huge deal unless they have some dirt. I guess the other option is that Gus is the worst poker player ever and just folded with a royal flush.
 
This makes no sense at all.

Who on earth would reject an opportunity to NOT work for $32M and agree to work for less than $32M?

As an Auburn fan said during my poker game last night, "Gus is paying Auburn to be our coach."

I read last night that as part of the new deal, if Gus fires assistants he has to cover the buyout with his own money. Is that true? If so, it makes this situation ever more puzzling. Why wouldn't he just take the $32 million and run? Does Auburn have dirt on him and does he have dirt on Auburn? There is really no way to intelligently explain this new deal.

I don't know if you can have dirt on this guy. He doesn't even cuss on the field. I think he's too nice of a guy and realizes that he is in bed with some crazy folks. He may just want out of that place and who can blame him for that!

:rolleye2: For the second time, I knew that, but the discussion upthread was about coaches coaching at Bama and going to the Barn. Dye is probably the most "famous case" because Coach Bryant saw him as an heir apparent at Bama.
