Saw a Tweet from a Barn recruit that said Gus told him he'd be the coach there next year. What kind of comfort/confidence is that for your current recruiting class??? There's a reason CNS is always locked in at a minimum of 4 years ahead. Granted, it doesn't mean a thing except there is the perception to recruits and their families that the coach that lures you is going to be there to keep his word as their coach.

Whatever their '19 and '20 classes were looking like before this will take a big hit.

Isn't is great to see???
Forgive my ignorance because some of you folks are way more knowledgeable than I am on some of this stuff, but I thought Saban didn't have a buyout?

You're correct. BamaMoon is meaning how Saban tends to extend his contract to be at least four years out.

I was referring to it being the second time I said I knew that Dye played at Georgia. I guess I missed the part about former players, but I thought it was about coaches who went from Bama to the Barn. Anyway, no big deal.

I'm sure there is debate about who CBP thought would be a good replacement. I've heard both Bebes and Dye, but in the age of news crawling vs. today it flying there was probably lots of opinions but none were known real well. FWIW, the Ray Perkins hire never seemed right to me, even though I was just a teen. Of course, the Bill Curry hire didn't feel right either. ;)
Ray Perkins was the last former Bama player that I wanted to see as the coach as he was the only Bama player from my youth to whom I never warmed. When I thought of him I thought of someone hard and unyielding like flint. I actually warmed up to him a bit as I got to know him from afar. Also, since the players seemed to really like him it changed my perception of him.

Curry was a heartbreak, especially since I wanted Bowden so badly. To me it was a dream that Steve Sloan would be AD and Bowden HC. It lasted about 24 hrs, then the shocking nightmare - Bill Curry. Joab Thomas, whew - he meant well but...

So it all comes back to defining themselves in terms of others.

Until that changes -- and I don't see it happening any time soon -- they'll always be what they are now. A wildly inconsistent 6-6 to 9-3 program, with the occasional outlying season both ways, forever chasing their tails rather than trying to move in the right direction.
As long as they have the meddling from the old guard, they will continue to be inconsistent and somewhat unstable. Until that changes, they won't be able to get a great coach who could make them contenders year in and year out. That would require someone like CNS who has full control over the program. I don't see that happening any time soon.

Yep. As long as Rane, Dye, Harbert, Bo Jackson and the rest of the Hee Haw gang run things their program will be a three ring circus that no top level coach will want to coach at.

Shhh, don't let them know how it's supposed to work.

From one of the Auburn boards. And yes, I really did laugh out loud.

"Haven't been able to check what's going on today... Anything good or are we still a screwed laughing stock?"

I was at the hospital across the street from my office checking on a patient and a nurse I know asked me to look at his computer...it was tracking a plane that gone from Montgomery to Norman OK...he asked me if I thought that meant that Bob Stoops was about to be brought in. I told him I had no idea, but his giddiness was such that I could have told him anything and it wouldn't have mattered. So I told him that, yeah, that's probably what it meant, so just keep watching & listening for an announcement. He was convinced that Big Game Bob was Auburn-bound...I didn't want to be a kill-joy, so I let him just live in the moment.:biggrin2:

I hope they get him. They can throw enough $$ to do it. The man's heart is out of coaching and he's said so multiple times. However, if it's enough, he'll take their money for a while...

Oh well, I can never remember how to do the Twitter copy and paste, but here's what Josh Moon tweeted earlier:

This says it all.

"I wish I could adequately convey the confusion that is taking place at Auburn right now. Trustees don't know what's going on. Coaches don't know. The AD is MIA. No one trusts the prez. And even the people directly involved aren't sure what's next."

From the article, it looks like AU trustee Raymond Harbert has been left in charge of negotiating and finalizing this deal with Gus. Is it just me or does this seem a bit odd?
He's one of the ones that shot off his mouth to get the deal through last year...

With Auburn being a public university shouldn't the public be privy to all of the fine print?
Only the contract with the Athletic Department for about $250K...

The big money "talent" contract would not be shown to anyone under any circumstances. :rolleye2:

It's been non-stop Gus on the radio for 3 days, and I'm sick of it. Ditch him already.

If he stays, he will be buying players if he wants to keep his job.

FYI, Joab Thomas didn't make a unilateral decision...a member of the committee interviewing candidates said that he blew them away. He always could talk...

Also, I will not reveal who but a former Auburn coach under TB was a good friend...I once said to him, "You all were not supposed to win at AU were you? You were to be the sacrificial lambs...and when you won they didn't know what to do with you." He replied, "Exactly.'

The statement came out from TUF several weeks ago that the portion of the contract that the private fund is responsible for (approximately 85% of it) was not handled properly between TUF and the University. Therefore, they consider it a sticking point going forward and will renegotiate that portion of it. That is simply Auburn/Lowder code for "we'll keep you tied up in court for 40 years before we pay you this buyout". The way this has been handled reeks of Lowder but he has no authority to speak for the University, so Harbert is handling that end. They don't trust Greene or Leath.
Bottom line ---Malzahn will not last beyond next year. At 53 years old, he's going to continue to coach (let's face it, he ain't going to be a TV guy). Auburn is simply telling him to go find another job. He'll either do just that and not owe Auburn anything or they'll keep him tied up in court for 40 years.
awbern would lose that case in a heartbeat. A junior lawyer could win this case against TUF. The contract was signed by both parties. If TUF has issues with it, it would be between whoever represented TUF and signed the document and whoever else at TUF that is complaining about it.

Besides, a lawsuit involving TUF would open them up to a subpeona...and they absolutely don't want that. It would cost them a whole lot more than simply paying Malzahn what he is owed and letting him ride off into the sunset. Malzahn and Sexton have them over a barrel if they choose to go that route.

Sounds like Harbert got them into this mess and his fellow cronies told him to get them out...
