I have my reasons for not liking Josh, but he has plenty of sources. There's no arguing that.
Who wants to play for a university that under handedly forgot some vital step in this extension and then uses it to gain leverage on the coach to force him to negotiate a lesser deal?
Also, how would private donors to tigers unlimited recoup financial losses incurred by buying out RDHSC with on the field success from his successor?

Why in the wide world of sports would he have any incentive to do this? If you want to stay next year you have to agree to a reduced buyout so we can fire you next year and it will cost us less or what? We fire you now and pay you $32MM? Uh, no thanks I think I will just take door number 2.

The only reason I would suspect Gus might consider a lesser buyout is getting the money upfront and moving on to possibly landing a lower tier head coaching job immediately.
I would expect that like many contracts with coaches, the buyout payments would be reduced if they accept another coaching position.
Get a say a $10-15 million buyout upfront due in full 90 days after termination and land a mid major, G-5 type head coaching job and move on with your life.

I have a theory about that. Arkansas wanted to hire Gus last year. The guy they hired instead hasn't exactly panned out. In fact, they got worse as the season progressed. Maybe the powers-that-be at Arkansas told Gus that if he can get the buyout down, they'll fire their current coach and bring him in next year. That's a win-win. Gus goes home. Arkansas gets the coach they want. The buyout they have to pay Auburn is less. And Auburn gets rid of Gus. I guess that makes it a win-win-win. Only we know that kind of thing never works out.
One thing is for sure - there's a lot of fine print in Gus' contract that we aren't privy to. He wouldn't agree to the terms, as we know them, if it didn't benefit him in the long run. His agent wouldn't allow that.
I think this makes Auburn look worse. They are literally trying to lower the buyout that they just approved last year. Why would any coach go there?
I'm not sure about that. But all we've seen is the equivalent of one or two paragraphs while the entire contract is many, many pages. So we really have no idea what is in Gus' contract.
I suspect that the vast majority of his compensation is provided by the private TUF.
And then he wound up at *u. And to further the switcheroo, Vince Dooley, who was a successful Coach at Georgia, played at *u. That always seemed to be weird to me.

The reality is that what proven coach in his right mind would go to Auburn. The only school with more booster interference in its football program is Texas.
So, I must read that Auburn weren't expecting Gus to accept their offer and they were stunned when he did so.
