I thought it interesting, how far Latin has slipped. Leo reads and writes, but doesn't speak it, once a requirement. The cardinal announcing his ascension erred. He should have said "habemus papam." Instead, he said "habemus papam-um," The "um" coming out as an afterthought. Most singular masculine Latin nouns do indeed end in "um." "Pope," "Papa" however, is irregular and forms the objective as "Papam." He wasn't sure of his grammar...
