Because of the nature of how our comments work, I'm going to lock old threads and update with new ones every few days.

1/22 UPDATE:

QB (6): Austin Mack, Keelon Russell, Jett Thomalla, Tayden Kaawa, John Gazzaniga (WO), John Cooper (WO)
Take: No needs here.

____________________________________________________________________________________

RB: (7): Daniel Hill, Kevin Riley, Akylin Dear, Ezavier Crowell, Traeshawn Brown, Jessie Washington (WO), Fredrick Moore (WO)
Take: Alabama is apparently still kicking the tires on several guys, most notably Miami's Gerard Pringle Jr., and Miami does not want to give him up. Alabama really seems to want to bring in a 5'10", 190-pound-type of guy with a lot of speed. I will repeat what I've said earlier -- if Dear has improved and Crowell and/or Brown are as good as their HS film, we don't really need to take another guy here But if it's Pringle, that changes things.

WR: (11): Ryan Williams, Noah Rogers, Rico Scott, Lotzeir Brooks, Derek Meadows, Cederian Morgan, M.J. Chirgwin, Maurice Mathis Jr., Aubrey Walker, Ben Jackson (WO), Cooper Mollison (WO)
Take: Nico Brown opted to transfer to Stanford, where his brother plays. Alabama has since taken commitments from two high school prospects who will be true freshmen in 2026, Maurice Mathis Jr. and Aubrey Walker. Mathis was committed to Samford at the time, but he did have other offers, including one from Vanderbilt. He's coming off an injury but has good measurables and will provide depth, even if not immediately. Walker is an even smaller version of Lotzeir Brooks but has speed that dips down into the high 4.3-second range, electronically-timed. He probably would have been a preferred walk-on if that was still a thing but will be on scholarship now. I wouldn't expect him to play as a true freshman but you never know. Alabama might be done here; it just depends on whether the coaches think Mathis can get up to speed in time for fall camp. There are plenty of guys still left in the portal but no one that has been heavily connected to Alabama yet.

____________________________________________________________________________________

TE: (9): Danny Lewis Jr., Josh Ford, Jay Lindsey, Jack Sammarco, Kaleb Edwards, Marshall Pritchett, Mack Sutter, Peyton Fox (WO), Jaxon Shuttlesworth (WO)
Take: Alabama took a commitment from Jaxon Shuttlesworth, late of Jacksonville State. Whether he's on scholarship or not remains to be seen.

____________________________________________________________________________________

OL: (23): Michael Carroll, Tyrell Miller, Kaden Strayhorn, Will Sanders, Jackson Lloyd, Ty Haywood, Nick Brooks, Racin Delgatty, Ethan Fields, Jayvin James, Bryson Cooley, Casey Poe, Mal Waldrep, Chris Booker, Bear Fretwell, Jared Doughty, Mac Smith (WO), Billy Roby (WO), Davis Peterson (WO), Baker Hickman (WO), Wade Estess (WO), Jamison Travis (WO), J.D. Martin (WO)
Take: Back on 1/16 we thought Alabama might be done outside of adding a developmental piece at tackle; instead, they took Mississippi State's starting left tackle Jayvin James. It's very possible OL went from being the biggest hitch point to being a team strength with this portal. Alabama now has seven tackles on scholarship, six of which were considered high-end prospects and/or proven commodities. There are six guards, three with SEC starting experience, and three centers, at least two of which are highly-thought-of prospects. I think we can officially breathe easy here.

DL: (20): Yhonzae Pierre, Jeremiah Beaman,Terrance Green, London Simmons, Devan Thompkins, Justin Hill, Edric Hill, Kedrick Bingley-Jones, Desmond Umeozulu, Caleb Smith, Zay Hall, Isaia Faga, Steve Mboumoua, Fatutoa Henry, Nolan Wilson, Malique Franklin, Kamhariyan Johnson, Jamarion Matthews, Corey Howard, Lane Whisenhunt (WO)
Take: The latest addition is South Carolina edge player Desmond Umeozulu, who appears to be able to fill either a Wolf or Bandit role for Alabama. If he can handle Bandit, he gives Alabama a true rotational piece to go with Devan Thompkins and keeps Alabama from having to get 20+ snaps/game from either Fatutoa Henry or Caleb Smith. There's a question of whether Alabama is done here; I'm going to say yes unless they just stumble on someone that's too good to pass up. In a perfect world, Alabama would get either one more Wolf-specific or Bandit-specific end for depth purposes. We're already at about an equal level to last year's defensive line, assuming Bingley-Jones wins his appeal for another year of eligibility. I'd like to see another established tackle added to the class but if Steve Mboumoua continues to develop, Alabama won't need that.

LB: (10): Q.B. Reese. Caleb Woodson, Cayden Jones, Abduall Sanders Jr., Darrell Johnson, Luke Metz, Xavier Griffin, Grant Johnson (WO), Jake Ivie (WO), Aiden Moore (WO)
Take: No change from last week. Woodson probably closes this one out although there's a chance we could add another guy if he's the right guy. I like our young guys here, all of them.

____________________________________________________________________________________

DB: (24): Dijon Lee Jr., Bray Hubbard, Rydarrius Morgan, Keon Sabb, Zabien Brown, Nick Sherman, Zavier Mincey, Carmelo O'Neal, Ivan Taylor, Chuck McDonald, Jordan Edmonds, Rihyael Kelley, Dre Kirkpatrick Jr., Jireh Edwards, Zyan Gibson, Kolby Peavy (WO), London Hill (WO), Walter Sansing (WO), Conner Warhurst (WO), Ty Roper (WO), Cole Davis (WO), Brody McCutcheon (WO), Griffin Hanson (WO), Kyle Clayton (WO)
Take: This looks done. Bray Hubbard passed up the NFL Draft, so I think Bama has its haul already.

____________________________________________________________________________________

ST: (8): PK Conor Talty, PK Tucker Cornelius (WO), PK Lorcan Quinn, P Adam Watford, P Alex Asparuhov, P Anderson Green (WO), LS Ethan Stangle, LS Jay Williams (WO)
Take: In the end, Alabama did indeed decide to take a kicker, Marshall's Lorcan Quinn. Quinn's resume already puts him ahead of the older Conor Talty, who now becomes a threat to enter the portal. Getting P Adam Watford from UNA is insurance against Asparuhov not being able to come back from his leg injury, and the take of LS Ethan Stangle from Syracuse was a necessity.

Has taken already/total to take:
QB: 0/0
RB: 0/1
WR: 3/3
TE: 2/2
OL: 6/6
DL: 5/5
ILB: 1/1
DB: 1/1
ST: 3/3

TOTAL: 20/21
Roster Size Total as of 1/17: 116/105

Outstanding Jess. Good portal pick ups. Now, you suppose we can find some upgrades for the coaching staff in the portal. 😄

116/105? Seems like there may need to be a culling.
No, nothing like that. Not remotely anything like that.

There can now be 105 scholarship players (previously 85). There doesn't need to be walkons anymore, but in the future that will be hard capped at 105.

However, every single current walk-on is grandfathered in. Alabama can sign nearly 20 more guys right now with scholarships.

Well, for expanding the scholarship roster to 105 , we seem awfully light in some positions we were really fat just a short while ago. How many quality wideouts have we lost the last 2 portal cycles? I wished Horton stayed, I just don’t see that special GoTo guy, unless Brooks keeps up his upward trend. Big shoes there with the loss of Germie and Horton. Anyone have that absolute confidence in Hollywood ? I Guess Meadows will step into the Big Receiver role vacated by #1, and Brooks will takeover the role of #5?or Maybe Roger’s? Hopefully Morgan flashes early.
Wasn’t Chirgwin a walk on?

Have seen discussed that many teams are going towards 65-70 old school "scholly" level players due to the expense and then filling out with guys who are basically given a scholly or partial scholly (which is now allowed as well) to fill in the old walk on depth roles.

Chirgwin did lay out very nicely to snag a TD at LA Monroe and showed some hands, but I doubt he'd be very effective against top notch DB coverage. If he is willing to block though, there are plenty of dummy routes to be run.

Rico Scott is talented. I think he shows those talents as a starter.
